My South African friend doesn't talk to me. Why?

I am from the Maldives (in Indian ocean, near India). I studied in UKZN, South Africa for three years. During this time very few white girls talked me. Probably I had only two girl's number on my phone. I texted a good luck sms during the exam for two days. Then she replied saying I was disturbing her. I was surprized. As it was my final exam I then came back to my home country. After that I sometimes email to my friends, but she never replies back. I realized she has even blocked me on facebook after I said hi. Its been 4 years since I left South Africa. I wonder if sending a text message is something thats so bad. Now I realize that among my friends in South Africa I dont have even a single white girl. Most of my friends are Black and Indian. Doest that mean racism is still there in South Africa? As a Maldivian I look similar to Indian.

Additional Details

Some people answered saying perhaps she was never my friend. Actually during tsunami she was the only one who emailed me asking if I was safe. That happened during my vacation after first year when I was in Maldives. She always used to ask me to help her in one of her modules at university. So she was not in anyway a stranger to me.

I was just a friend, never intended a relationship with her. Dont think she did either.

I wouldn't let it worry you she is not worth the stress. I think the reason behind her animosity is her personality not her race. Maybe she was just jealous of you for some reason ie you were prettier, smarter, more well-travelled etc some girls can just be nasty.

Hymm, I am Indian from South Africa and most of the time when I meet Indians from India it's like too different worlds. Even though we may look the same. They very warm, hospitable and even presume to be friends when we just met or because we the same race. I don't know...maybe it is that way with all races. We feel "safer" with common cultures.

Anyway, it must be that you and this girl were never friends in the first place? Remember every culture has a different idea of what "friend" is. If she already ignored you and also asked you not to disturb her, please respect that. Why do you care so much about having a White South African friend anyway?? You have other South African friends, that should be more than enough regardless of their colour or creed.

I dont like foreigners either and I am South African of Indian descent. Heck I don't even like foreign Indian and Paks who visit my country. Then there are the Black South Africans who attempt to do forced removal of foreign nationals back to their country. And offcourse the Afrikaaners who tried to send the Engels packing back to the UK in the past. It doesnt make us racist see. It just makes us xenophobic. You really can't blame us either. We got enough crap going on with each other and we really truly do not need you lot coming in here and tramping our toes. For future reference I suggest that you try studying at an American university. I believe that they are much more friendly out there

I am sorry to hear that. Forget about her. She is probably one of those Sandton "princesses" whose only ambition in life is to find a rich husband and shop herself to death. Find other worthy friends and don't think everyone is the same just because of one unpleasant snob.

I'm afraid racism is still slightly here. I've certainly felt the brunt of it. Not all of us are racist though.
