Why does diet coke taste different from a can then from a glass?

I hate, HATE drinking my diet cokes from the can, even when its cold it still tastes gross and weired. I only can drink it once its been floating in ice for a couple of minutes. So why does it taste so different even its cold in the can? Is it the metal? Wny would that change the flavour though. anyone else find this?

Smell accounts for 70% of taste.

When you drink from a glass with a wide rim, you're smelling just the Coke instead of the aluminum can. The wider rim allows for easier smelling. That's why wine glasses are shaped funny with wide rims so you can experience the whole "taste sensation."

thanks. didnt know that taste pretty much comes from smell. the tidbit about wine was great too.
i knew that smell had something to do with taste, but damn...70% of it!

Wow..I have never thought of it like that. Awesome answer and awesome question too:)

Also the glass makes it colder; a different type of cold than when in a can. This changes the taste as-well.

Interesting question!

Maybe you should wash off the can before you drink directly from it. God knows what all is on the can making it smell so bad!

I've always thought Pepsi and Coca-Cola tasted better when it came in the glass bottles. It's the same with milk in a cardboard carton or a glass bottle. I don't know why this is , but it seems better tasting.

Im weird I prefer it out of a glass, but I love the taste of bottled water in the plastic bottles, plastic to me makes water taste better but soda is better in glass glasses vs our Tupperware glasses. When we go to the bar my dad says different glasses make beer taste better (probably the beer head)

I only drink cokes out of the can. Its the ice that makes it taste different. You can put a canned coke in the fridge and you can pour a warm soda in a glass with ice and they will taste drastically different due to the ice alone.

Its because the drink both reacts slightly with the aluminium can and also slightly dissolves it. Glass is made of silicon dioxide, and will not react, or dissolve. Therefore, drinks from cans have the metallic taste for this reason. Go glass! or on tap...

I loovee to drink it out of the can. I think it's soo much better.

The REAL reason is because cans are treated with a chemical wash and sealer before filling and glass containers are not.

The al can is coated with a baked on epoxy coating on the inside of the can that can flavor the beverage. Cans have best by dates on them. Glass has no coating and will not take up the flavor of the glass. Beverage coatings are heavier than beer coatings because the pop will mask the flavor.

Interesting Q&A! :-)

it's just thinking bout having a cold ;) . if you can't smell your food or drink, you can't taste it what so ever. :)

i posted a comment here!..

Yay!..

I also believe it's because when it is poured into the glass, a lot of the fizz goes. I know some people who are extremely bothered if it's not poured properly.

I fxcking love my pickle. :]

I've also noticed a difference in taste between soda in a plastic bottle, and fountain soda, (in a plastic cup).

okay.....thats creepy :)

Actually the aluminum can play a part in the taste. The cans are lined with an organic substance to reduce the aluminum taste. Glass is non-reactive and therefore doesn't impart a taste to the soda. Open a can of pineapples and let them set out for a day and you'll see. You can taste the metal.

MUST BE TRUE, If you close your nose while you drink, you dont feel the taste. Thats what children do.

awsome does it work with wiskey

LMFAO the tidbit xDDD

I actualyt like it better from a can :S

Maybe it's the fact of the aluminum can. the chemicasl reaction might do alot on it

how do people get so many veiws on thier queston?!

The place it really tastes different is from a soda fountain, because fountain Coke® contains saccharin in addition to tastes-like-aspartame.

I've always wondered why this was.

That's cool! The smell thing actually makes sense because when I eat with a stuffy nose, the food doesn't really have as strong of a flavor.

You may also be drinking different Diet Coke. The stuff in the cans contains no saccharin, just aspartame, but the stuff from fountains at restaurants and such do contain saccharin. Coke was actually sued for this practice, but the case was dismissed.

I was told that is was because you actually get some of the aluminum in the drink while you drank

I like drinking it from a can better...

That can't be it, I pour it all in a cup and it has a totally different taste from a can, to a 2 liter, and fountain all different.

The aluminum is said to alter the taste of sodas in cans versus the bottles.

Here's an experiment, which discusses the differences in caron dioxide between the 2, which ultimately, explains why soda tastes differently in the can versus the plastic bottle:

i actually prefer diet coke in a can - i prefer the tase, i have noticed this before too, but i'm the opposite to you, i love diet coke from a can, hate it from a bottle or glass.

Its Can-Flavored

The actual taste difference is due to the loss of carbonation, not from the smell. When you pour the soda into a glass you loose some of the carbonation, which changes the taste, same as adding ice to the glass.

GREAT question

It used to be a tin taste instead of aluminium

I don't really care if I drink from the can or glass. It tastes the same. But the canst could be dirty.

i always thought it tasted better from a can cus when u pour it into a glass its more exposed to the open air.

I don't go with the answer given. I think it is the strong chemicals that are present in the canned coke that makes it smell weird. When the questioner adds ice in the glass with coke it just dilutes the coke and releases the chemicals gas in the air only to make it smell less weirdly.
