What are some good introductory chapter books for a little girl?

My daughter is 4.5 and is still in preschool. However, she has started to express an interest in chapter books. She loves to be read to, and seems to be moving past the preschool picture books. We have read Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. She loved that one. I also tried Stuart Little by E. B. White, but I couldn't stand that one. I know Charlotte's Web is also by E. B. White and have considered trying that one...does anyone have any suggestions for other good chapter books to read to a rather precocious 4 year old?

The Magic Treehouse series is really good for beginning readers. They're easy to read and the "mystery" is continued through several books at a time, encouraging them to read the next one. The series is really cute and exposes them to all kinds of real historical events.

The Andrew Clements books (e.g. Frindle) are excellent and make kids think. Also, my girls loved Cornelia Funke books (Inkheart) but this might be a bit much for her until she's older. Also, we have a huge set of illustrated classics, abridged and illustrated versions of classic novels. You find them at lots of bookstores and discount stores, usually for about $3 each. My kids ADORED them. Everything from Black Beauty to Robinson Crusoe to Pollyanna to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Also, look at the Misty of Chincoteague books.

Junie B. Jones books (I don't remember the author) and Ramona Quimby books by Beverly Cleary. These are great chapter books that my 6 year old reads.

My girls are 4 1/2 and 6, and they have several chapter books they enjoy. We've read Charlotte's Web and a couple of the Little House books, too. I also was not impressed with Stuart Little (and neither was my 4-yo).

Some others that you may want to try...
Magic Treehouse series (adventure stories with a brother and sister)
Junie B. Jones series (the first ones start with her in kindergarten)

I can't remember the name of the series, but there are a bunch of fairy chapter books with titles like Scarlet the Garnet Fairy, Bella the Bunny Fairy, and Megan the Monday Fairy. (We started with the animal series -- bunny fairy, pony fairy, hamster fairy, etc. -- and those were great for my girls who love fairy stories.) Basically, each story has two girls who have to help the fairies recover something that Jack Frost and his goblins stole from them. Simple concept, but my girls enjoy it.

Oh, and we tried one of the Ramona books, but it didn't have enough pictures to keep my 4-yo interested.

There are also some easy reader chapter books -- things like the Young Cam Jansen series -- that might appeal to her.

They're not chapter books, but if you have a girly girl, you may want to check out Pinkalicious and the Fancy Nancy books. Those aren't so preschool-y, and they're really cute.

Ask at your local library, and I bet they'll have some great recommendations for you, too. I know we've gotten some fun reads just by asking the librarian.
