If you are looking for modern, grownup literature, I'd be sure to include 'Nobody's Fool', by Richard Russo; 'Charlotte Simmons' by Tom Wolfe; 'The Hill Bachelors' by William Trevor; 'Naked' by David Sedaris; 'The Memory of Running' by Larry McLarty; 'The Road' by Cormac McCarthy; 'The Color Purple' by Alice Walker; and 'Lonesome Dove' by Larry McMurtry.
Don't be put off by the ones that latter became films-- they were chosen for a reason.
Alice Walker has written a couple duds, otherwise, anything by any of these writers is worth your time.
Of course, if you are willing to go back a few years earlier, you get into the giants of the English language-- Austen, Twain, Dickens...
