Large goldfish in 10 gallon tank?

I have a 10 gallon tank . It houses 3 gold fish, 2 are gold and 1 is colorful and has a longer tail. All are around 4 inchs long. I also have a 5 inch "cleaner fish" in my tank. The tank used to get dirty fast but now i clean it like every week end, and change filter every 2 days. So is it healthy for them to be in the tank, and can i add like 4 really small fish. I had gold fish goldfish for 4 years and "seem" healthy. HOw ever i dont have ANY PLANTS OR ANY THING like that so the tank is really open.

PS i cant afford a bigger tank and the reason im getting 4 new small fish is becuase someone i know cant take care of them and his are deing

Additional Details

When i bought the fish they were like less than inch, also i dont purcash 2 filters every week, i was the old ones.

Im probably gonna donate my gold fish to my cuz who has a pond(he has over 10 years of exp but he lives like 6 hours away )
Also, i dont have room for a larger tank so im just gonna get smaller fish but will my cleanor fish "dwarf plecostomus " be well?

have your goldfish lived in that tank for 4 years? is so congrats. If not, well. First off a 10 gallon can barely with stain 2 goldfish. They will not live there whole life's in a 10 gallon. Goldfish are uasly only kept with goldfish, no more fish! If the other fish are dieing then you have no business taking them cause they will have a higher chance of dieing do to the goldfish waist. Overall bad set up. I understand if you cant afford it cause that is what other fish people on yahoo answers don't clearly dont understand. But you can afford to change filter pads every 2 days? And yet i(just me) am giving you the answer that you should and still you are gonna get 4 more fish?

Source(s):

not trying to dissipation you, but just try to invest in another tank, give them to some one with a large tank(not a pet store like others say), and dont take the 4 fish unless you get rid of the goldfish first.

    Three options:

You recognise that you need a bigger tank, at least 50G (though I'd get one more like 90), and get one.

You take your friend's fish, add them to your already massively, massively overstocked tank, and watch all of the fish die, or at least suffer from ill health and problems with stunting.

You do the right thing and have your friend's fish and at least two of your own taken to a local independent fish store off your hands. Better still, find a neighbour with a goldfish pond.

10 gallons per goldfish. Minimum. Stop cleaning your filter so often as well, else there's little point in having it.

I had to read your question twice just to make sure i was actually reading that you had 3 goldfish in a 10 gallon tank

You are over stocked and have out a death sentence on your fish
a single gold fish needs 20 gallons you clean it every week and clean your filter every couple of days you cant do that either

If your not prepared to up grade your tank take the fish to an aquatic store and sell them and no you cant add any more fish

One goldfish is too big for a 10 gallon. They pollute the tank quickly and can grow pretty big given the chance. They won't last long in that tank, especially if you add more fish. One goldfish needs a 15-20 gallon and for each additional goldfish add 10 gallons. Look on craigslist for a cheap aquarium that is larger.

your tank is just too small for 3 gold fish and adding more would be a good idea ether it could kill them

You tank is badly overstocked. The fish are still alive because you are taking very good care of them, but after 4 years, common goldfish should be 8-10 inches long. The lack of space, oxygen and water quality is definately affecting them, just not badly enough to actually kill them, yet. But there are limits to how well you can care for them in a small tank.

Re-home your bigger fish to a pond and start again with smaller ones. Yes you can keep 1" goldfish in a 10gal, untill they get bigger. Repeat as needed. The pleco is pushing it for a 10gal, they are also a large messy fish, even smaller ones. Is it a dwarf, or just stunted?

I was given a 5" pleco that was 4 years old. In the last 3 years it's grown to 12" now it has the space.

good to see you are on top of your cleaning but you don't have to change the filter media just clean the media in the water you take from the tank each week 25% water change.
you have probable heard this a thousand times before but the tank is a bit small.
as for putting more fish in i would have to say no, could you not have the tank from your friend which the fish are already in it might be worth asking, plants in a gold fish tank usually get ripped up or out so it is not worth putting any into your tank it would just take up more swimming space.
    hope this helps
