Question inspired by "The Awakening" by Kate Chopin..?

Edna the main Charcter says that she will sacrifice the unnecessary for her children, but she will not sacrifice herself. What she means is that she will give up everything for her children, except for her happiness and passion. My question to you: Should a woman give up herself for her children? When you give birth to a child, are you obligated to sacrifice everything for it? even your happiness, passion, drive and well being?

My mom gave up alot for me and my siblings, I think. My sister gave up alot for her kids, too, but she doesn't seem like she sacrificed anything. They both act as if they would gladly give up everything for their children. I'm not sure if I could be so loving and selfless, but then again, I don't have children.

Edna always seemed selfish to me, but maybe that's only because my mom (and the other mothers I've encountered) are much more selfless.
