im so sorry, ive only read the awakening but i can tell you that

she uses birds as symbolism, there are a lot of french words mixed in because theyre from new orleans (dialect), and some of the characters are creoles (of french decent).

the author slowly introduces edna into love with another man, which awakens her. throughout the book, she goes through many awakenings. she learns to swim, she discovers herself and notices her own body for the first time, and she realizes her position in the world.

the book was written ahead of its time, before feminism had really emerged.

hope this helps. also try http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/awakening/…
