I'll go with Bird on a Wire

It is simple, raw and honest.
I also really like:
Everbody Knows
Closing Time (I used to work as a DJ in a biker bar and we often played this one as the last song of the night. The patrons always got up for one last dance)
Sisters of Mercy
Suzanne

I used to really be into Leonard Cohen, I havent thought about him for awhile. Time for a re-explore.

BA: Closing Time - Leonard Cohen (Your question made me drag out the old CDs)

BA2: wow, hmmm it depends on the style of music. As a canadian I can attest to the vast diversity here and I wouldnt want to compare apples to oranges.
Country: Corb Lund and the hurting Albertans. Funny! and talented, what more could you want. He's not well known outside of Canada.
Highlight songs: Truck Got Stuck & Hair in My Eyes Like a Highland Steer. (Worth checking out, I promise, even if you don't like country. I don't like country)
Folk/Celtic: Two Canadian artists shine here. Loreena McKennitt (some of the most beautiful celtic folk you'll ever hear! and her home town is about 20 mins away from me!) Also for folk/celtic: The Rankin Family.
Rock: hmmm I'll go more obscure than mainstream. Try Jakalope.
also this band is good I just havent gotten into them: Marianas Trench

For good aboriginal/ Inuit music: Susan Agulkark (Inuit) has a great voice. Eagle & Hawk (Aboriginal) are very popular. (They are based out of Winnipeg, which is my 'hometown')

Overall: Neil Young

Great question!!! Thanks.

Asker's Comment:
Playing "Closing Time" as the last song of the night sounds awesome! Also, great "Bird On The Wire" lyrics.

Great answers, thanks everyone!

I like the songs Closing Time, Coming Back To You and Ain't No Cure For Love. I have a good book of Cohen's song lyrics and poetry; it's called Stranger Music. I also like a song of Cohen's that was recorded by Emmylou Harris: Ballad Of A Runaway Horse. And Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah.

I have had Leonard Cohen on the brain for the past week. "Sisters of Mercy" will not stay out of my head, so I'll say that for a song. For an album, I guess Songs of Leonard Cohen, but I've only heard his first three.

    2: Neil Young, probably.

Top 20 favorite songs (sort of in order)

    Avalanche
    Memories
    Sing Another Song, Boys
    The Butcher
    Death of A Ladies' Man
    Teachers
    Is This What You Wanted?
    Seems So Long Ago, Nancy
    Master Song
    Iodine
    Queen Victoria
    I Can't Forget
    The Future
    Leaving Green Sleeves
    Tennessee Waltz
The Lost Canadian (Un Canadien Errant)
    First We Take Manhattan
    Democracy
    Because Of
    Lady Midnight

I really love all of his albums, but my favorite is probably Death of A Ladies' Man, Phil Spector's wall of sound works perfectly for this album I think. It's so hard to choose a favorite though, because his first five albums are pretty much perfect IMO. Actually, out of his eleven albums, the only two I really haven't been able to get into for some reason are Various Positions and Recent Songs.
