What kind of literature reading would help me writing good English composition?

Does anyone have any suggestions about reading works of any author(s)[ or specific works] that would help me having good knowledge in English? I want to write composition later on.
I mean we read everyday newspaper or the newyorker. But to develop good English those are not enough. In old school, teachers used to suggest Charles Dickens kind of thing. So I want to get some suggestion about some twentieth century author whose writings are scructurally lucid [ unlike Joyce, just an example] but still very good in quality.
I am not a student of humanities or arts, so please don't suggest anyone like Joyce or Proust [ its beyond my scope of understanding].
Any teacher or professor or someone related to the field with any suggestion?

P.S. : If it helps, I am 25 male, like reading novels and novella. I have a technical background but want to aquire good knowledge in English.
