Prose:
Go for Jane Austen every time - her work is witty and very readable and understandable - and loads of gossip! If you like the darker side, try Northanger Abbey - very gothic! Thomas Hardy is readable but seldom has time for a happy ending! Wodehouse is a giggle!
Poetry
My choice is Edward Lear - his nonsense poems are a delight! Wilfred Owen wrote very powerful poetry from the trenches in WWI. Betjeman is light and easy to cope with.
Drama:
Shakespeare is the classic, but it would depend on the play if you have trouble with the language. Ayckbourn and Stoppard provide shades of light and dark in a modern setting. Caryl Churchill writes great modern feminist drama.
Enjoy the course - lots to choose from there!
Source(s):
Years of avid reading! And amateur drama.

well I'd do Margaret Attwood - The Handmaid's Tale because it's one of my favourites anyway, lol
Swift and Austen are quite good, Angel Carter - interesting, if not really my type of thing. Gothic reinterpretations of fairytales mostly, quite dark.
*doesn't really like any of the rest*
