Am i stupid for not understanding parts of a book.?

Question

I'm reading the dharma bums by Jack Kerouac and for the most part i understand it except for when him and his poet friends start talking it just makes no sense what they say to me.Maybe it's the language of poetry are the times.

Nah, you aren't :-) That's why when possible, I jump at opportunities to read books with groups or for a class, because discussion usually clears up any confusion one might have with a particular part of a book.

I don't really have experience with the book you're talking about but I know when I am reading one and it comes to a part where it's just talking or explaining something I can't focus. I read it really quick to get it done with then go back because I don't understand and even going back i sometimes still don't get it.

Well no. You just need to pick another book and read that. When you think you can understand the book, try again. Or maybe, read the part over again until you understand it and if you still dont understand it a few trys later, move on. Go to where you left off. Hope it helps :)

I've never read that book but take two things into consideration: first how old are you? second what grade level would this book be considered?

If you are young it could be understandable if your are a bit older this book might be really high level (at least I hope it is for your sake)

no you're not stupid. it just means that mabye the book didn't "bring you on..." i've had that happen where i like a book but later i found out it meant something completely different and then i realized i didn't like it as much... so answer to your question: no you're not stupid!
