The House of Mirth by Edith Wharton

Well, it really depends on what you like to read.

My first choice would be The Color Purple. Short chapters written straightforwardly. It's written in diary form by an uneducated black girl (then woman - she grows throughout the story) but it's one hell of a story.

Celie (the girl) is molested by her stepfather, becomes pregnant, gives the baby up for adoption, then is given to a guy with a bunch of kids and no wife so he'd have someone to take care of his kids. It's about her growth as a woman as she puts up with all his crap, and how she finds the child she gave up. But so much happens along the way.

Wuthering Heights is a dark, twisted, gothic romance about star-crossed lovers. Creepy but cool.

Slaughterhouse five --speculative fiction - Billy Pilgrim is a US soldier during WW II. He becomes a POW and goes insane. He's kidnapped by aliens and put in an alien zoo, learns how to travel in time, and relives his life. Strange but interesting. Everything Vonnegut does is weird.

Those are my top three picks.

The Iliad and Antigone are from ancient Greece. So if you don't mind reading antiquated language, you might find them interesting.

Jane eyre is another gothic romance, but it never appealed to me like Wuthering Heights.

The House of Mirth is about rich people in the early 1900's and how decadent they were.

I never read the others.

To fary rochester♥, yes, its for school. (:
And now, I'm deciding between Wuthering Heights & Slaughterhouse-Five. I'll look into it, I'll probably get both. And, thanks for everyone's help and suggestions. Really helped! I'm gonna go out tomorrow and get them. Thanks again.(=

I loved the Iliad by Homer. I'm a sucker for greek mythology and I love epics, but the others seem interesting

Farewell to Arms, short declarative sentences and a love story for the lost generation.

They're all good, lol. =) It's a great selection of books you've got there. I've read them all... I think my favorite is probably Antigone. Though if you read that one, I HIGHLY suggest you read Oedipus Rex too, haha. =) They sorta go hand in hand.

Anyway, pick a name out of a hat-- they're all great for different reasons.

I read Antigone in school and I really, really did not enjoy it.

however, Wuthering Heights was mentioned quite a few times by Bella in the Twilight Saga.

    Im thinking its a winner.

I'll give you a couple of picks, since I don't really know your tastes:

Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books. I like it because she is really pretty ordinary- the only thing that makes her stand out is that she sticks to her guns and she's sensible. It has a really good romance, and the story is engaging.

Wuthering Heights- it's kind of dark, but it's not scary or anything. It's a really fascinating book that explores relationships and love and human nature. I love it because everyone gets exactly what they deserve eventually and it gives you a really good look into how stupid, selfish, and shallow people can be. It has a romance too.

Antigone is a really good one too. It isn't as long, but I love it because Antigone is the coolest heroine ever! She knows what she wants, and she stands up for her morals. It is also a tragedy, and I love reading tragic plays, but if you like happy endings, I would stick to Jane Eyre.

    I hope this helps!

it depends on what ur looking for. personally i think wuthering heights was amazing. it has ur love story mixed with psychotic behavior and anger and wrath and evil plots and its just a great piece of literature.

jane eyre was also good if ur looking to read about a girl growing up and her life and love and such things.

the iliad is great if ur looking for action

i however dont recommend antigone it was pretty boring to me atleast

I've read several of those books that you listed (but not all of them), and I have to say that Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut is my favorite book. It's actually my favorite book of all time. Not only is it a classic piece of literature that is easily recognized by many people but it's also fun and entertaining to read (There's this one character who commands everyone in his troop to call him "Wild Bob," and his catchphrase is "If you're ever in Cody, Wyoming, just ask for Wild Bob!" That phrase became the catchphrase for my entire junior and senior class, because we all thought it was so funny). It's a relatively easy read because you don't have to work hard to understand all of the aspects of the book (although it does make you think). You don't have to try and translate it from any Old English style of writing, since it was written in 1969.

It's a fascinating book because it gives the reader a chance to see the effects of war on a human mind, but it's also really interesting to see how Vonnegut expresses the mental distress in his main character. The main character, Billy Pilgrim, comes home from WW2, and finds that he has become "unstuck" in time. He visits a foreign planet inhabited by aliens called "Tralfamadorians," where they keep him in a type of zoo along with a porn star, but since Billy has the ability to become "unstuck" from time at any random moment, he also travels back to his time in the war, his time at home after the war, and even his life before the war.

I don't want to give too much away, but I do want to mention that when I read this book in high school, I had hated every single other book we read. I hated it all because I thought that anything that was regarded as "classic" was for stuck up academic type people, and I also hated being "forced" to read something. Anything that was "required reading" was automatically unfavorable to me. This was the only book that I read in my high school English class that I liked, and now it's my favorite book ever. That book made me go out and buy other books by Vonnegut, all of which I enjoyed very much.

Sorry this was a really long answer, but I hoped it helped. :) I read Slaughterhouse-Five when I was in the eleventh grade, and I loved it.

You should also note that Slaughterhouse-Five is one of the few books that some people are still trying to ban from schools, and any book that's banned from school is automatically good. ;P

Difficult question, they are all good for different reasons and I don't know you taste which would be helpful but this would be my choice:

Wuthering Heights--is considered one of the best classic romance novels ever written albeit a bit on the dark side and in the end everyone gets what they deserve. http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/wuthering/…

Farewell to Arms--Also a love story of a very different type but the allure of this book is if you haven't read Hemmingway you really should. He write mostly short declarative sentence but they are so powerful you will not want to put the book down.
    http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/farewell/s…

Jane Eyre--is a gothic romance novel that showcases such themes as:
    Love versus Autonomy
    Religion
    Social Class
    Gender Relations
    http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/janeeyre/t…

Really, you can't go wrong with any of the choices and if you run into trouble I think all of them are on www.sparknotes.com to help you out with understanding anything about the plot or things like that.

Oh wow. That is hard. When it comes to literature it's hard to pick a favorite as they have their different styles. I plead you to read everything, but for now you can read Hemingway first. :)
