The Bible, and Marijuana?

My Sister wanted to find a biblical reason to prove smoking weed was sinful, and told me that even though the bible says God made the herb for man to use, it also says to obey the land of the law, and obviously smoking marijuana is against the law.

Well, my question is. Who gets to decide the land of the law? It's not God these days, is it? So what is your opinion, is smoking weed actually SINFUL according to the bible? If you could back up your response with a bible verse that would be helpful.

According to you beliefs, God is perfect and he created everything, so therefore marijuana is created for a purpose. That purpose is you smoking it. You won't find a bible verse about pot.

    Check this out...

    http://www.420magazine.com/forums/cannab…

It's not sinful, we've used it for thousands of years... Jesus probably wore hemp clothing :)

    *Edit*

No Sage that fearmongering with a list of universities isn't very fair now is it, Im sorry I'm going to have to pull you on a few points...

Potency HAS NOT increased, this is sheer propaganda, and more to the point even if it did rise by a whole 5% as you said its would still require 13,000 pounds of marijuana in 15 minutes to overdose...

You say twice as likely to develop mental health problems, the real reason why there has been a 85% increase to physchiatric hospital admissions is people choosing 'treatment' over Jail, now if you got caught with weed what would you choose?

Marijuana alleviate's all feelings, so to just mention negative one's is biased.

Marijuana has ONLY the possibility of being linked to testicular cancer (in one study) and in fact in many other studies evidence leans to anti-cancerous elements in THC that makes cancer cells 'eat' each other, ALOT more research is needed (but because its illegal this cannot be done effectively)

I actually am going to stop going point to point with your arguement, as from here on in your go completely wild with mixing scientific terms with made up facts... I suppose this will be the best way to void your lies...

For anyone that's interested in seeing the sheer volume of lies we are feed by these people, read my sources, which are real link's and decide yourself...

For sage, If you post some evidence that proves that even one single fatality as a direct result for marijuana intake it will void my own arguement, and I will gladly call myself a liar... thing is there's not a single case recorded in history, funny that, considering how dangerous the drug is.

No I don't think it is sinful according to the bible because smoking cigarettes is legal and that is super bad for you and they come from the earth (along with lots of other chemicals). Marijuana is decriminalized in several places as well. It depends on the place people in America decide the laws because we live in a democracy but in some places the ruler gets to decide. I am sorry I don't have a bible verse for you.

I think you mean law of the land...

    Source(s):

you should google marijuana and the bible it comes up with tons of sources.

According to the bible, Adam and Eve could consume anything accept from the Tree of Knowledge, and that was an apple tree. So that means the garden of eden had a whole section for marijuana.

How can WE make one of GOD's creations illegal?...Who are we to say something GOD made is wrong/bad?

And the 'Law of the Land' can also say Gay marriage is 'legal' - that doesnt make it any less sinful

The greater good an the protection of the vulnerable. That includes yourself from what you have posted!!

Marijuana potency has grown steeply over the past decade with serious implications for users. Average levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the main psychoactive ingredient) in marijuana sold in America rose from 3.5% in 1988 to 8.5% in 2006. "Skunk" is the most potent strain.

In the same period the number of admissions to psychiatric hospital caused by the drug soared by 85 per cent due to the fact that those who smoke the drug regularly are more than twice as likely to suffer illnesses such as schizophrenia, hallucinations and delusions later in life.

Teens using marijuana to alleviate feelings of depression just compound the problem.

As well as psychotic illness cannabis can cause affective disorders such as depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts. Even worse it is linked to cancers.

The toxic substances in marijuana smoke, especially the toxicity of acetaldehyde, causes damage to DNA. Because of its lower combustibility it contains 50% more carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including naphthalene, benzanthracene, and benzopyrene, than tobacco smoke. Ammonia levels are 20 times higher while hydrogen cyanide, nitric oxide and certain aromatic amines occurred at levels 3-5 times higher.
Users tend to inhale more deeply than cigarette smokers, which increases respiratory burden.

Cannabis users display neuropsychological dysfunction (relative frontal lobe functioning deficits, cognitive inhibition) and attentional deficits similar to those found in schizotypal or schizophrenia patients.

Regular use can shrink the parts of the brain which control memory, emotion and aggression. The hippocampus, which is thought to govern emotion and memory averages 12 percent smaller and the amygdala, which has a part in controlling fear and aggression, 7 percent smaller. This suggests that heavy daily use may be toxic to human brain tissue.

Blood flow velocity is significantly higher in users and they have higher values on the pulsatility index (PI), which measures the amount of resistance to blood flow. This is thought to be due to narrowing of the blood vessels that occurs when the circulation system's ability to regulate itself is impaired. This leads to abnormalities in the small blood vessels in the brain.

The active chemical in MJ called delta-9-tetrahyrdocannabinol (THC) binds to cannabinoid (CB) receptors located on several cell types in various organs. This greatly increases the risk for heart attacks and strokes in addition to impaired learning and memory.

It can also effect physical health. Three to four cannabis cigarettes a day cause the same amount of damage to the lungs as 20 or more tobacco cigarettes a day. Thus there are rising levels of lung diseases such as emphysema.
It can also effect the unborn child. Scientists have identified that endogenous cannabinoids, molecules naturally produced by our brains are functionally similar to THC from cannabis and play significant roles in establishing how certain nerve cells connect to each other. Maternal cannabis use allows THC to travel through the placenta and impair fetal brain development and impose life-long cognitive, social, and motor deficits in affected offspring.

Low doses of Ä-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), equivalent to that in the bloodstream of an average marijuana smoker facilitate infection of skin cells and can cause these cells to turn into malignant sarcoma. Men who regularly smoke cannabis have a 70 per cent increased risk of testicular cancer.

And then there are all the car crashes caused by people driving under the influence of drugs that are at this moment being quantified but already show that more drug drivers kill than drink drivers!!

I might be sheltered, but I have never seen or heard of a violent stoner. There are plenty of violent alcholics, coke heads, crack heads, etc. Not to mention the active ingredients of marijuana have been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of glaucoma, as well as increasing appetite in HIV/AIDS patients and cancer patients.

It would be a stretch for me to justify calling that sinful.

That's not to say that there aren't serious health risks, and Sage does a fantastic job of outlining them.

She's probably referring to Romans 13, which says we are to submit to governing authorities. The only caveat to that is if the governing authorities require that you do something against God's law. If God's law & the government's law come into conflict, then you follow God. Otherwise, you do what the government says.

So, in that sense, MJ is "sinful", because smoking it is defying the law of the land, and you can't really claim that God tells us to smoke weed...

But, if you live in the US, you can lobby to get the law changed, then everything is fine, smoke away. Legalization looks promising, too,,,

It would appear that no one else has quoted a single Bible verse so here you go

    1 Corinthians Chapter 6 verses

19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

    Romans Chapter 1 Verses

22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
    28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31 Without understanding, covenant breakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

So does smoking marijuana glorifies God in your body - I think not
