Just 24 percent of those accept Palin's explanation that she resigned because it was the right thing to do for Alaska. More than twice that percentage – 52 percent – cited her political ambition as the reason for her resignation. An additional 14 percent said they don't know the reason.

Sarah Palin came to us as an outsider, without the taint of a Washington D.C. insider. It was a common person without the backroom politics as usual that made her so popular. The MSM has failed this country and supported without fact or ability the current prez. So the cbsnews surveys are not accurate.

She's popular because she is a fresh and dynamic face on the political scene, because she is not a Beltway Insider, because she is not an elitist, because she shares the values of the heartland of America, because she achieved her political office on her own, AND because she (and her family) are being mercilessly harassed by the Libs for these very reasons.

The only people she is "popular" with seems to be the liberal news media, since we know they are on their own agenda why are they? C)Governor of a state Who ever heard of Clinton before Bill came around Sarah made it on her own not on the coat tails of her hubby!

She is so popular because she has morphed into a popular culture figure, fed by the media (both left and right). She is no longer a politician but a sort of celebrity, helped on by the Tina Fey SNL impersonations and all the talk about her by liberals on talk shows and conservatives on the radio. She hasn't really done anything other than govern since the election, yet for some reason, the talking heads insist on dwelling on her (for good or bad is based on your ideology)

I don't like Palin at all, but to answer your question:

1. Sarah Palin is an attractive, powerful woman, and that's a refreshing face to be able to put on the GOP (vs. mean, old, rich white guys).

2. She's very videogenic and a very effective public speaker when she's not ad-libbing.

3. Sarah also takes a very hard, socially conservative, neocon position on most issues, and that plays extremely well to the Rush Limbaugh/Sean Hannity/Glenn Beck/Anne Coultier fans.

4. Often to her own detriment, Palin has made it clear that she won't be "handled" by her party or anyone else. She's a self-made celebrity who's making her own decisions. That resonates with a lot of people, especially women, from both parties. As Tina Fey (who shares these same independent traits with Palin) once said (while referring to Hillary Clinton): "***** is the new black."; e.g. powerful, outspoken women are in style.

5. Palin's self-made. You don't rise up from a small town in Alaska to become a governor, VP candidate and easily the most famous person from one's own state without bringing something to the game. I disagree with Palin's stance on everything and I think she's a terrible leader and lawmaker, but I give her full credit for being a genius when it comes to working the political and public relations machines to her advantage.

6. Palin's controversial - sort of like a "Howard Stern" of the GOP. Her admirers can't wait to hear what she'll say next, and those who despise her listen with equal passion.
