Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

There is an exact source and factual answer that most people overlook. While the question is intresting philisophically, its a moot question with an answer. Can you find it?

Close scrutiny does not remove the fact that all answers to this question are speculation that rely on some system of methodical cognition.
Whether it is deemed rational or irrational is a matter of subjectivity.
The nature of the question as a philosophical inquiry is that it reveals something about human nature.
The need to have information, so as to satisfy the egos desire for control.

All the answers were good in their own right. The Bible (Torah in Hebrew) in the first book explains how G-D created animals before man eggs comming later, but obviously this answer is not going to suit everybody, so the debate goes further. Thanks
eggs first duh!!!!...they never said it had to be a chicken egg....dinosaurs had eggs....then later evolved a chicken...sure there might have been chicken like dinosaurs but they werent chickens...they were chicken DINOSAURS!!! so in my mind eggs were first

ummm no ur all wrong. when u ask the question which came first the chicken or the egg rite???? so cuz u said the chicken first it came first. duhhhh

Easiest question in the world to answer. I don't know why everyone makes a fuss. The EGG came first. Dinosaurs laid eggs before they evolved into birds, including chickens. Eggs were around for millions of years before the first chicken evolved. Duh.

U guys are absolutely right ... chickens did not exist b4 dinosaurs ... DUH

there's no philosophical debate.

The egg came first because dinosaurs laid eggs and dinosaurs existed way before chickens did. I learned that in AP Biology =).

the egg came first then the chicken at lunch time. =^)

I love this joke and it fits this question, here it is, a chicken and egg are laying in bed after they just had sex, the chicken roles over and says to the egg, "Well I guess I answered that question"

~ Think about the question and you will get the joke!!!

The first organism that would later result in a chicken began slowly mutating over time. The mutations occurred within an egg. So eventually, the finl mutation occurred, and when the egg hatched, a chicken was born. This happened with mulitple eggs at around the same time. COMMON SENSE PPL!

Nearly, your idea of evolution is way off. An animal does not evolve by mutating throughout it's lifetime. The mutation that causes evolution happens when a new embryo is created, when some random genetic trait becomes prevalent. So, the first chicken would have come from an egg.

none of this is right because no one know because God the creator of earth and he chose what was first and since no one was there no one will ever know and this is fact! evolution suck and is an excuse to what certain people don't want to hear!!!! if u have a problem with this leave a comment

the question doesnt state the species of the egg. since nearly every animal (even human) uses one form of egg, or another to reproduce, then logically the egg came first. if the question were to read "which came first, the chicken or the hard shelled external chicken egg?" it would be rhetorical.

The chicken came first in the question so chicken is the answer.

don't care... both taste good.... hope i don't catch bird flu... heheheheee

lol the chicken came first. God made it. =)

What ever you ordered 1st should come 1st ... simple

Let me settle this once and for all. Anyone who knows anything about farm animals or just animals in general knows that in order to make an egg, you must first have a chicken to lay it. Once it is layed, you must have a chicken to sit on it or incubate it, turning it several times a day to hatch it.

Why does Yahoo! consider this news?

Hulky Says: the Chicken came first because the egg was very disappointed and rolled over and went to sleep all upset.

I was about to ask this question several months ago. If I knew it was going to be on Yahoo's homepage, I would've asked it! I would say the Chicken, because the where did the egg came from? Chickens probably evolved from something else first.

At some point in time there was a mutation. It could have occurred in an egg or in one of the parents. And it doesn't make a slightest difference which was the case..

God created a mature man and woman first so they could "be fruitful and replenish the earth". It just serves to show that he would have created mature animals first for the same reason. This is the only sensible answer.

I think that there is no start in a circle.

the dinosaurs???? bucuse chickens came from them

Chicken. I am dissapoint.

god put two eggs on earth. they both hatched and reproduced

no the real answer is the EGG because this is a riddle and its not talking about a chicken egg its talking about an egg in general and dinosaurs laid EGGS and dinosaurs came before chickens so there you go.

There was this chicken who fell and broke its leg the veterian cut it off and put a splint in it
the next spring the chtcken hatched seven baby chicks they all had peg legs

Sorry sting...you make NO sense whatsoever!

well i think the first u order come firstt.......

Its a tricky question, the Answer is Chicken. Like this one, "What is the 7th letter in the alphabet?" the answer is H not G. Why? analyze the question. T, H, E, A, L, P, H.

This clearly shows who reads the Bible and who don't. But even without the Bible, God-given common sense would tell you the chicken came first. What are you going to say next that the ax was invented before man as well? Get real!

well, in order for an egg to hatch there has to be a chicken to keep it warm so i think the chicken came first.

Gensis says that God created the heavens and the earth and all the creatures inside of it. The chicken came first then they laid eggs! Just like grown-ups came first then they had babies... Like it or not, believe it or not its the truth people.

The chicken came first. God created animals so they could reproduce and that wouldn't have been possible had it been an egg. Where would the egg come from but inside the hands of God?

well lets say this so called evolution is real. if it was real, wouldnt something have mutated during the span of the human life? iv been told by people that believe in evolution it takes a long, long time however, if you think about that the life a humans, it should have happened to something...

This is just a really stupid question invented by creationists to think they had something over the rest of us intellectuals.
There IS a correct SCIENTIFIC answer, and that is that the egg came first.
New species are formed from a genetic mutation in the embryo, FROM the parents.

The egg came first. A pre-chicken laid the egg and you have a chicken egg that then became the chicken. Simple...you fools.

Its a tricky questions. The answer is Chicken, because in question composition the first subject is CHICKEN. If the question is "Which came first, the egg or the chicken ?" the answer is EGG.

out of technicality it means "which came first the chicken or the chicken egg" not "which came first the chicken or an egg" so really it would be the chicken cause how else would the egg hatch if it was not incubated for hours first? the answer is really that simple but u people are digging too deep

whatever layed the egg was VERY similar to the chicken, in fact ther eis no such thing as a chicken, it is CONSTANTLY mutating.

It really makes me depressed to see that this question is still viewed as a challenge.... Shut the bible and open a science book.

i thnk d egg...no idea hw but we do dis q's in skul n i ges d egg

Yep the egg came first. That one I learned while I was watching a Bill Nye lecture at a local college.

ok my comment has to deal with those "other answers" posted. i don't understand is how each and every one of those answers to those questions had more thumbs down than thumbs up. what is the point of going to this page if you're just going to vote that you dislike every answer? try to be more open..

The question boils down to whether you're religious or not, if you are then the chicken came first. Scientifically inclined people know that chickens, and all birds, evolved from dinosaurs and therefore the egg came first.

oh and by the way, F*CK yahoo news, why don't you douche bags report about the 34,000 kids that die DAILY FROM STARVATION AND APATHY.

Watch THEZEITGEISTMOVIE.COM

Whether you a Creationist or a Darwinist the ultimate answer is the Chicken. Creationism: God created the Adult form of the animal to then procreate. Darwinism: The first single cell organisms were also a mature form of the living organism creating another through mitoses.

A circle has no beginning

Hey, Tai-Tai, what we have here is a case of total indoctrination in the belief of a God. That's not the point here. If you believe in Voodoo, more power to you. The world needs all the stupid people it can get to act as cannon fodder when it starts raining chickens. Butch

There are 2 answers to this philosophical question, which this question is. 1st, foremost is the theological answer. God created Heaven and Earth and all those words pertain to, which is pretty much everything. Heaven meaning the vast Universe, Earth is life. 2nd, Evolution, a chicken, eventually!

It is a tricky question, evolution is not involved. Analyze the question first. It is a puzzle or a joke question. Answer is Chicken, why, it is mentioned first in the question.

Please. Whether you believe in Intelligent Design or Natural Selection, the fossil record shows it clearly -- there were eggs (be them protoreptile, protobird, or protofish) prior to the existence of the species we currently call "chickens". Eggs = first. All hail the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Since we are human...history will tell us that...everything we dont know falls into the God bucket...God made 2 chickens..they had crazy chicken sex...and low and behold...we have Moons Over My Hammy...any more questions? God did it.
Just dont ask what made God..then..well..you have a few problems

Chicken, egg....egg, chicken. Probably the chicken. Who cares.

What is really important is that so many intelligent people haven't the vaguest idea of basic, elementary English. The word it's means "it is," people. It's NOT the possessive form of it. For that, all you need is its.

We've been debating this for almost 3 years. Common sense is the best answer.

like all things interspeices mating did it so the egg came first

For all of those who wax philosophic regarding this inane quandary I say only balderdash.

For all comprised of more sensible natures I think we must all together accept that the egg was a design function a long time before anything that might even resemble a chicken. Perhaps befsentienceance.

The Chicken came first, i mean who gave birth to that egg?

site you must see!
TheOriginalChart . host56 . c o m

Either the egg or the chicken came first...the real question is did they cuddle afterwards?

1) Ridiculous. This is not philosophical OR religious. The questioner ASSUMES the bible gives the correct answer. THIS is the correct answer: The chicken and chicken egg co-evolved. Neither came first since there was no first chicken. The chicken and the chicken egg evolved from a previous species.

Which came first, the fetus or the human? Do you believe in God?

I would say that a circle has no beginning.Just like the phoenix and the flame.

yes yes, but all remember that God made things to glorify himself, all is for the glory of God. So does it really matter, chicken or egg? There are things far better to glorify God than to worry about the chicken or egg.

well, if you think it for another side, Dinosaurs laid eggs, therefore, the egg came first.

If you think about it, the egg couldn't come first because a chicken has to sit ON the egg for it to hatch. (Assuming they were created, born, etc. at the beginning of time). And my reasoning has nothing to do with the bible, it just makes more sense to me then mutation if we're ruling out God.

Scientifically and Religiously, chicken came first.

Religiously because God created the animals.

Scientifically, the chicken is first because it had evolved from a bird-like dinosaur named Archaeopteryx.

HOLD ON!!!!!..There must be a chicken to lay a egg, it is called evolution people. Damn I would of hated to be that first chicken-est thing that dropped a egg out of my shout...must have been strange and painful....who wouldn't sit on their own crap that came out of my body.evolution is the answer

I think Morpheus has it right, I agree with him. The egg laid by another Galliform (maybe an ancient Pheasant) was first, and with it´s mutation. Mutation, some times, is due randomly. Then it pass its characteristics to it´s offspring until getting to the "chicken" that we know now a days.

That was the worst answer ever. In fact, it didn't even answer the question which is a violation of Yahoo's community guidelines. Personally, I don't give a rat's *** about the guidelines, but I don't know why Yahoo would choose to put this question on their front page.

obviously the chicken came first because the egg is formed by the internal functions of the chickens body.
its like asking what came first, the poop or the human? obviously the human came first because poop is formed within our bodies.

This question brings about a religious debate. I would point to the Bible and easily proclaim the 'chicken'. I believe the Bible is fact and Genesis 1:24 answers this question. I also suggest that those that put their faith/trust in evolution should visit: www.answersingenesis.org

Simultaneous. Since it's only the female that lays the eggs and females (poultry or human) have the minutia of the egg present even before they begin laying them.

It's really simple. Eggs are for breakfast, chicken is for supper. So, you see, eggs came first, duh!

since when did GOD become a bad word??? but of course if God was smart he'd would have stuck the eggs under a heat lamp.... so egg first

2) Species do not occur in a single generation. It is a long transition. Just like here is no exact point in the spectrum where orange becomes red, there is no exact point where chickens began. Only childish biblical stories lead one to believe that. Paul is correct (and unnecessarily humble.)

anybody who SERIOUSLY said egg as an answer has got to be autistic.

Chickens lay eggs, which then breed more chickens...to lay MORE eggs.......soooooo where the f**k is the egg coming from on its own?

How about the fact that scientist like to remind us that all life came from a simple existence?
What about the ameba? It derived from elements that joined together at the microscopic level. Does not any species of life start this very same way? With a favorable environment things grow.

Don't care which came first ! I'm poaching the egg and grilling the chicken.

the chicken came first in order to lay and incubate an egg in order for the egg to survive up to it's hatching. Eggs can't incubate themselves and the chicken has the natural instinct to perform incubation.

The two evolved together. They mutually morphed as their environments required. So neither preceded the other. It's eminently logical. It is the question that lacks logical sustainability, because it takes for granted that a concurrent sequence of events must take place for a single outcome.

I'm a Rambler, I'm a gambler i'm a long way from home and if you don't like well leave me alone i eat when i'm hungry l drink when i'm dry and if the moonshine don't kill me i'll drink to i'm dry!!!! Who really cares!!!! The potato came first!

Few thoughts.

If you go with Creation - then the chicken came first. Creating eggs for all egg based animals without anything to protect them isn't Godlike (order based).

If you go with Evolution - Life comes from something. Any 'egg' would require a parent. Thus the chicken came first.

The egg b/c chickens dont lay eggs hens do! THAT IS SCINCE

I guess that the key to this answer is:
Which came first-- breakfast or dinner?

...butter for frying the egg in a pan,
or salt, pepper, some garlic and a roasting dish for the chicken?

I'd eat either one.

The chicken came first because there is no way that and egg and just form there in a nest and then crack open and be born without heat. Which proves that there is a God in this world. No matter what evolutionist say there is not explanation for how organisms came to earth with out a greater being.

I would say the chicken came first. If the egg came first, who kept the egg warm and protected it until it hatched, and after it hatched it has to be taken care of. No baby can take care of itself! To me this is an easy question.

FACT.....the chicken came first. somebody had to *** to make that egg. lol.

3) So it is clear that once again the fundie trolls, with their compulsive down-thumbing of scientific answers to scientific questions, prove that ignorance and superstition are alive and well in our society today. And Y!A applauds it.

This is a trick question. No one can possibly find an answer to this question...

personally, i always just say the egg first, cause breakfast comes before dinner :)

I love Tai Tai's comment above...isn't it the other way around? That religious fundamentalists do not want to hear demonstrable facts and prefer to believe in stories that were made up to educate people without education over 2,000 years ago? Birds evolved from egg-laying dinosaurs, live with it!

yeahh according to darwin every species came from selective mutation/ survival of the fittest. so some species mixed to eventually make an egg containing a chicken! lol :D

It is a trick question. I was the egg.
luckily making money online is not as difficult as this.

Maariya.......................… you have the correct answer! And you have proof to back it!

The answer is the chicken because it comes first in the question. If the question was what came first the egg or the chicken the answer would be the egg but in the question is asked the answer is the chicken.

...I actually find your question/answer-fishing horribly offensive. You present it as something logical and rational, which we should all agree on, and then frame it in the context of your religion, automatically invalidating everything and everyone who should so dare to disagree.

I think life began in the water through organisms. Natural gas boiled the seas creating amebic life. So everything came from organisms in the begining, then evolved into amonites and snails and other bacterias and nano technological creatures. Snails like the fetus are curved and enwrapped.

The Chicken came first.
Animals were created the same way Adam was created by God. From the sand/earth.

the egg came first. it rolled across the road.... that's why the chicken crossed it. it was chasing her wayward egg!

It was the egg.

Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life.

Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg.

Everybody is wrong and right; this question depends on how you look at it.

The egg - it would hold the mutation which would be the chicken - but this egg with it's mutation would have been laid by pheasant perhaps - some 100,000 years ago.

But actually there is no "chicken" as the species is forever changing and evolving into something else.

Well coming from a non religious background I would say the egg come first because it is evolution. Anyone who study evolution would know tiny cell of eukaryote and prokaryote led to the complicated structure of multicellular( including human ) we know today.

Morpheus has it right. The first chicken was the genetic mutation or blending of it's parents that weren't necessarily Chickens. Maybe creationism would say the Chicken - but I can't answer in that vein, I am not knowledgeable enough of scripture.

Why are you guys saying that according to evolution the egg came first?

Wouldn't the necessary traits for a bird to be a chicken must had resulted from that bird adapting to some natural demand.

Once that bird, or whatever it was before it became a chicken, adapted to its proper environment, that was the point when it became a chicken, only then it passed its traits along through the egg.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, philosophically I think this question is a paralogism. There are fallacies in reasoning in every attempt to argue and prove the real answer.

In my opinion the Chicken came first because God created the animals and each animal had a mate. The two animals had to mate and then hence came the egg. Just like an adult came before a child. He created Adam as a man not a child as he did all of his animals too. That's just my opinion of it though. My source would be practically any type of Bible you can find and comprehend.
