Why do so many people assume that all same-sex relationships are short-lived and based solely on sex?

The writer Gertrude Stein met her partner, Alice B. Toklas, in 1907 and lived with her until Stein died in 1946. How many people live with someone for almost 40 years just because the sex is good? Is it possible that their relationship was based on more than just sexual attraction?

Because they're pig ignorant and prejudiced....and they have never spoken to a gay person unless it was to shout abuse at them during a gay pride march, would be my guess.

My Uncle and his partner were together for 53 years. They met in teachers college and for most of their lives they had to keep their love a secret from all but the closest family members. They were flatmates as far as most people were concerned. Pretty funny really that people swallowed that...when they traveled overseas together every year (they were both teachers history and English respectively), gave Christmas presents out signed Love from Max and Tom, bickered about housework and Max bought all Tom's clothes, as Tom (my Uncle) was an inveterate slob and Max was a real stylista!

I loved them all my life and my parents were always very open with us...so i grew up knowing what gay love was...before it was called gay. Mum and dad used to call them "special friends" lol!!

Tom died of lung cancer in 1993....and Max lasted exactly two months after him. He simply died of a broken heart.

Anyone who knew those two men could not possibly have seen anything evil, tawdry or fly by night in their relationship. Their love was the most perfect union of souls I have ever personally been witness to.

To be truthful I don't often think of same sex marriages. It is just not on my list of things to worry about everyday. So you can't assume this your blanket statement applies or that it is in fact, factual.

I have a feeling your answers will fall under the stereotype that Stein was a woman and that lesbians will make longer term commitments than gay men.

Either way, it's just bad stereotyping regarding socially constructed gender norms.

I actually have plenty of objections to same sex marriage that have nothing to do with this. In fact, as a divorce attorney, this isn't one of them.

they fear the unknown, maybe.
of course it can be based on more than sexual attraction. love isn't just one thing, such as sexual attraction. it's many things.
I personally know many gay couples that have been together longer than the straight couples I know.

I don't assume that at all. My niece is gay and she changes partners faster than she changes her underwear. But, so does one of my daughters. I just can't keep up. This is not a gay, straight thing.

Maybe about 25% stay true to their "love". The rest just do it out back of clubs, in the clubs, or at home while there other partner is at work or on vacation. Gays usually don't "honor thy partner" if you know what I mean.

If straight couples can ruin marriage all by themselves, I say that gay couples should have an equal opportunity to have their marriages succeed or fail on their own. I'm pretty sure they can do better than the 55 hour record set by Brittney

I would really call this a case of marginalizing what you don't understand. I would venture to say that people who believe that do not have any experience with people of that lifestyle outside of what they have seen on tv. I have known a few committed gay couples over the years and in most respects did not find them any different than their heterosexual counterparts in terms of how they carry out relationships.

Here in California, our electoral system was used to marginalized and disenfranchise a minority group (gays). Why isn't the right wing screaming about the injustice?

Further, a supreme courts first duty is to promote liberty and not to stifle it as they did when California's supreme court upheld prop 8. Why isn't the right wing screaming about that injustice?

It seems to me that straight couples don't stay together very long, despite the marriage certificate and kids. I've known many gay couples who have been together for decades. It doesn't matter what your preference, if you're not committed to stay together for the long haul, you won't.

In 2045 BC some guy had 100 wives so lets make that legal also--after all it is my Right to sleep with as many women as I want so why should not everyone pay for all the children that would come out of that arrangement as well as all the food/medical/housing...required for me to have my Rights fulfilled.

Homosexual relationships are not something I think about unless sanctifying them is being forced on me.
If this is overall about allowing homosexual marriage, then I suggest you read some articles in magazines like the Advocate and OUT, in which many in the community openly admit that equality is not the goal of homosexual marriage; destruction of the traditional family is.
To those who mock quicky heterosexual marriages (like Brittany Spears) will you put your actions where your mouth has led you and join me in attempting to tighten divorce laws so that such occurrences don't repeat, or will you just sit back and do nothing so you can mock those who disagree with you?
