The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood
Atwood rocks!
Then read Oryx and Crake, also by Atwood. That's one of my all-time favorites.

The Catcher in the Rye
or
Slaughterhouse 5
Both books are classics, and most schools will make you read both anyways, so you'll be ahead of everyone.
Best of luck!

Slaughterhouse-5, On the Road, and The Catcher in the Rye are my favorites from the list. They're all wonderful, original, and thought-provoking novels.

I recommend "Snow Falling on Cedars," "The Catcher in the Rye," and "Slaughterhouse Five." I've read "Snow Falling on Cedars" (good movie too) and "The Catcher in the Rye" is in my top three novels all time! "Slaughterhouse Five" is on my must-read list, as well. You probably can't go wrong with any of these three!

Brokeback Mountain, by Annie Proux - It's set in the west and is about gay love, in a time when, being gay was almost a death sentence. Especially if your suspected.
Anyway, even though the ending was tragic, it still was very good, because you feel a lot of different emotions and can sympathize with the characters.
The Catcher In The Rye- Coming of age book, told from the views of a teen.
