If it says read an essay then I would suggest that you look them up as authors of critical essays. Many authors write critiques about fellow authors works. I would suggest Virginia Woolf only because I am partial to her. This link contains some of her essays online from a book. I am also giving you a link with some of her other essays online for you to choose from. I suggest you try to find these in book form though if you can or check the legitamacy of these sites, but I assure you she wrote many essays as well as many of these other authors.

Also, I think her essay how one should read a book would be easy to understand in that you don't need to be familiar with other works to understand it. There is another essay critiquing Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre if you have read both of those too.

You've never heard of E. B. White (Charlotte's Web)? Or Virginia Woolf? Or Amy Tan (The Joy-Luck Club)? Or George Orwell (1984)? Or Sandra Cisneros (The House On Mango Street)? Also, I've read some Jamaica Kincaid, though that was in college, in a Women's Studies class, I believe.

Anyway, as for essays, I remember testing into AP English and having to write a response to one of Orwell's essays. So I would suggest checking him out. I'd also try Sandra Cisneros since she provides a Latin point of view that has been very popular lately. The same can be said for Amy Tan but she provides an Asian rather than Latin perspective. Start your search there, I'd say.

Good luck! And bless your heart for starting on your Summer homework already!!!! :)

Try Eudora Welty. She wrote prolifically and there should be most, if not basically all, of her work online and probably with comments and notes.
In fact, here is a good starting point for her:

Read and enjoy one of America's best writers. And, good luck.
