Tradition. Actually, he was drawn during his lifetime and didn't complain at all. Out of respect, as his actual likeness is not known, muslims refrain from drawing him.

You could draw Muhammad if you wanted, and it would cause moderate uproar, just doing it tastefully and without deriding the historical figure.
My ,02 cents on the question.

Graven images are NOT idolatrous, as long as they're taken just as images and not as the actual thing behind it. Idols and statues are different things.

however, practicioners of islam who oppose non muslims drawing muhammad are no different than christians who push thier beliefs on others (the two religions have a lot in common in this way).

they want people to act as muslims even if they don't suscribe to islamic religion and that is VERY WRONG.

Because the fear generated by religion causes people to go out of their little minds trying to figure out and impliment what they feel He wants from us and usually ends up generating a lot of ridiculous little rules and rituals, hoping He will like us.
