    -x3 + 3x2 + 4 + (x2 - 5x - 1)

I'm assuming that the numbers after the letters are exponents
    ...3......2.........2
    -x +3x +4+(x -5x-1)

you can remove the () when there is a + before it
    ...3.....2.......2
    -x +3x +4+x -5x-1

    ..............................2.......…
you can add the x to the 3x
    ...3......2
    -x +4x +4-5x-1

you can add the 4 and the -1
    ...3....2
    -x +4x +3-5x
The equation above would be a Jr. High answer

Assuming that this equation is equal to 0 you can find the value of x.
    ...3....2
    -x +4x +3-5x=0

rearrange the equation so it's easier to work with
    ...3......2
    -x +4x -5x+3=0

divide the first 3 values by x
    ......2
    x(-x +4x-5)+3=0

Up to this point I am a little rusty so I'm not sure how to finish it, but I know it is possible. First try to make a binomial, but if that doesn't work you will have to use the quadratic equation.
