What are your favourite classic children books?

i can't wait for my little son to start Just Williams...i shall relish reading them again with him...!

London, April 28 (ANI): Classic children's books have beaten modern titles including the Harry Potter series to be named the best children's stories of all time.

JK Rowling's best-selling series was overlooked in favour of classic tales in the table compiled by children's laureates Quentin Blake, Anne Fine, Michael Morpurgo, Jacqueline Wilson and Michael Rosen.The five children's laureates were asked to pick their favourite children's book and went for timeless classics such as Richmal Crompton's Just William, Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories and Josephine Poole's Snow White.

Only five of the 35 chosen were published in the last 20 years and a fifth of the titles were released in the 19th century.

OH goodness-far to many there to pick from-s of my favorites-Loved (and still do) Little Women,The Railway Children and all the Enid Blyton books.
And Tigerlilly just reminded me of another favorite-Mrs Pepperpot!
The sad thing is my 10 year old does not enjoy any of these books at all.Read 1 Enid Blyton-Mallory Towers -and really didnt like it.She wont even try any of the classics!! xx

Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Wore out my childhood paperback copy and purchased a new copy in hardback. Also have it installed on my Ereader.

So many to chose from
For early readers I loved Gingers Adventures and the Peter ans Susan series.
Aesop's fables are great for teaching morals and anything by Roald Dahl.

Read the Little Tim book when I was a child. Surprised Black Beauty isn't listed.

I loved The Chronicles of Narnia by CS Lewis, in fact I still read them.
All the Enid Blyton books especially the St Clares books.

I'm going to echo the Narnia books as my favorites.............I loved Beverly Clearly books as a child as well. I also loved the Little House on the Prairie books.

Sturat Little made the list and I also loved Charlotte's Webb by White................................

I think excellent books for girls would also be the Elise books - can't think of the rest of the title.........

As a small child I liked:
The Lion Witch and the Wardrobe
Winnie the Pooh
Secret 7 series
What Katie Did

But once I could read properly I never really liked "children's" books. I read adult books from about 10.

Wuthering Heights was my favourite.

Edit: Ooo yes and Rebecca. Strangely my daughters love all the old classics: The Jungle Book, Little Women, Swallows and Amazons etc.

Going by the ages of the judges it's no surprise that the classics came out top. I was such an avid reader as a kid I'd find it hard to choose, I can't begin to guess how many books I got lost in. How do you choose one book from all the Famous Five for instance? To this day I can picture life on the old sailing ships or adventures up the river, all gleaned from books.
Richmal Crompton lived close to where I grew up and though I doubt I was aware of it at the time it may be why the William books appealed to me so much, I could easily relate.
