Believers, what would you do if God disappears?

I'm atheist but I'm just interested about what you would do if your imaginary god hypothetically poofs out of existence? What would happen to your morals when there is no reason to be righteous anymore? (no eternal punishment)

My father is an atheist. While I was growing up, he emphatically told me there was no god and, therefore, no rules. "Don't obey anyone," he told me in no uncertain terms. "Don't even obey me."

When I decided for myself that I believed God has appeared and that I wanted to be a follower of Jesus Christ, however, I found out our family did have a religion and a hard and fast rule. The religion was atheism and the rule was you couldn't follow Jesus Christ.

Buddha? Fine. Confucius? Terrific. The great atheists of the past four centuries? All the better. But Jesus Christ? Absolutely not. My paternal grandparents disowned me. My father unleashed his anger on me.

I paid my dues by studying under a German existentialist philosopher. My challenge to her: Convert me back to atheism or I'll be a follower of Jesus Christ all my life. After studying the great atheists over the past four centuries, I came to some amazing conclusions. They could write brilliantly about any subject under the sun except God, the Bible, and Christianity. Even those who wrote great textbooks on logic couldn't piece together a logical essay against God's existence.

For them, God's non-existence was a matter of faith. It's a faith I couldn't accept. I've written two books telling my story and addressing these issues in depth. I've listed both below.

well for me if God were to disappear i would still live my life the way i live it now because it has been the best 20 years of my life serving Him.

Now Morals and Righteousness are not one and the same. Morals are my beliefs of what is right and wrong and the borders I place not cross them. They are created to follow common law, inherited traits from our parents and can be religious in concepts are were most laws.

Now righteousness it can only come from God I am righteous because He is righteous...without Him there is not righteousness, I am stained without Him. We cannot be righteous in and of ourselves that is SELF RIGHTEOUS and thats what most people dont' understand.

Umm.... their God already DID "poof" out of existence. The only thing they have to go on is the Bible. And although I would dance a dance of happy happy JOY if the Bible "poofed" out of existence, that probably isn't gonna happen.

Your question is flawed, if you believe that God is imaginary, then he does not exist in your frame of ref and hence can not "poof" out of existence as you put it.

Assuming we get past this flaw, your question answers itself in part, there would be no reason to be righteous. That is not to say that a majority of people wouldn't act in a moral way. At least for a generation or two, however, it would be illogical to act in a moral way if it was against their self interests. Basically, morals, logic, nothing makes sense without God and if we are truly here today and gone tomorrow we should eat, drink and be merry like Epicurus.

But still your question is flawed, Christians do not act morally out of fear of eternal punishment, they act morally out of love for the creator. Eternal punishment occurs not because of moral actions, but because of the pride in refusing to bow before the creator and accept Christ as lord over your life.
