How come laura ingalls wilder doesn't know she's having a baby?

In the little house on the prairie books, in 'The First Four Years' laura starts feeling sick, and she has absolutely no idea that she is having a baby until her mom tells her like 5 minutes before it happens. how can she not know???

This is funny since I am watching a show right now on TLC called "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant." Usually the women continue to bleed throughout their pregnancy(or don't have normal periods to start with) and gain very little weight(like 10 lbs.) Plus they usually deliver early, so they dont show too much.

Different times, dani. In those days, sex was considered such a dirty thing that many adult women had not a clue about sex, menstruation, childbirth, or menopause. Many thought they were ill when they had their periods and thought they'd recovered when they were pregnant.
