Recommend some classic books to read?

Question

I'm beginning to tire of some of the contemporary books, could someone recommend (and include a brief plot description) some classic books?

I really loved the Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter (which isn't really "classic") does anyone know of any kind of bizarre, borderline creepy but still beautifully written books like that?

I also love Frankenstein and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but hated the Scarlet Letter

1984 - George Orwell....must read

Lolita - Vladamire Nabokov...creepy, confusing, plays with your mind, you will be creeped but by the end of book, you will be like damn what a great book.

I hated the Scarlet Letter too. I loved To Kill a Mockingbird, which is about a black man charged with raping a white women in the 1930's. I don't recommend reading Hemingway - absolutely boring. I'm going to start a Tree Grows in Brooklyn soon, which sounds like a good book. There's tons of lists of classics if you google it. Happy reading!

Here are some of my favorites -

The Brothers Karamozov - Dostovesky (I think I misspelled it)
awesome Russian lit. if you're into heavy characterization, this is a great book.

Catch-22 - Joseph Heller - wonderful, slightly anti-war, but mostly anti-stupid, it's a great book about the way humans interact. It focuses on exaggerating humanities worst issues so we can see them through a greater lens.
