no, mary was simply blind herself. she went to collage for the blind, and afterwards came back home to live with her parents.

She was blind, but taught a regular school class room, or as it was in those days, the school was one class.

Well on the show Mary was blind and married Adam who was also blind and they both taught at the school for the blind. I didn't read the books so the answer may be different.
