I'm creating an illustration with a gun, it takes place in the 1950s, what type of gun should I be looking at?

Its for the short story "A good man is hard to find" by Flannery O'Connor. I want to Create an illustration with a gun, but want to use a gun from the proper time period.

I would suggest a Colt model 1911. Obviously from the date, it's been around for quite some time and was the Army's standard handgun for many decades. It's also very recognizable and was the gun of choice for Mike Hammer in the Mickey Spillane detective series.
