Australia's Involvement in World War II & "Australia" the movie?

Ok, so i recently watched the movie "Australia." In the movie, the Australians are brutally attacked. Did that really happen? When & Why?

The movie is seriously over dramatised, but...

Darwin was bombed more often and more heavily than Pearl harbour.

Some Australians in Darwin did panic and flee south. But remember, nothing had stopped the advancing Japanese until then and it would be several more months until Australians did turn the tide.

The Japanese machine gunned Australian POW nurses, in uniform, in cold blood, in Malaya.

This was an enemy whose code of conduct was entirely alien to ours.

Other than that, I'd have to go see the movie.

People do tend to get brutally attacked in wars, otherwise they're just debates.

About the only thing accurately depicted in that film was the Japanese attacks on Darwin. The War Memorial has more info at http://www.awm.gov.au/units/event_59.asp

The Japanese also bombed Broome, another major town in the Northern part of Australia. They were only a few sea miles from Australia and it is possible they intended to invade.

Check out the film 'The Overlanders' too, very similar to 'Australia'.

I haven't seen the movie. I do know that in WW2, the Aussies were right in line with Britain, Canada, New Zealand and other members of the British Empire, to overcome the Axis.

Well the Australians participated in both theaters, European and Pacific. The Japanese didn't officially invade Australia, they tried to but couldn't.
