I think it all depends on what you want.

Do you want a purebred with predictable traits and do you want a purebred to do a job that it was bred to do? Or do you just want to a lovable mutt (whose traits are unpredictable) to be part of your pack.

Both rescue dogs and breeder dogs are great and they all deserve homes. I like to have a rescue mutt and a purebred from a breeder both.

I currently have a purebred poodle and a Jack Russell terrier mix (my JRT mix is a whole lot healthier than my poodle but he came from bad breeding)

And don't buy into the "mutts are always healthier because its just the luck of the draw" a responsible breeder will do health testing on all their dogs to make sure the dog comes from the best breeding possible

It depends, are you planning on showing it? If so then obviously a breeder. If its just going to be a family pet, then definetely get a rescue pup. They may be a bit harder to train based on what has happened to them in the past, but you are giving them a second shot at life!

depends on what your needs are

for my purposes I require a well-bred, purebred who has been bred for generations to work.

It depends on what you want in your dog.

I know what I want, and I'm willing to pay a great breeder for it. Also, the breeds I'm interested in don't come up in shelters often, if at all (in the last year, I have seen under 10 purebred Irish Terriers in all of North America on petfinder).

If you are not willing to pay a lot for a well-bred purebred, then adopt form your local shelter.

This question is a no brainer for me. I don't believe in breeding so rescuing/adopting is my choice.

My opinion is that it depends depends on what the person is looking for in a dog and what suits them best. There is no one better than the other despite what the Adoption/Rescue brigade says.

If you are looking for a specific dog you want to know its background, want a working dog, etc etc - Reputable Breeder

If you aren't looking for any specific breed or you want a mix or you want to save a dog from being put down etc - Shelter or rescue.

a rescued dog i think is the best..if u get a dog or pup from a breeder then u are providing them with money so they can keep breeding and the more they breed the more animals will be put into shelters anyways..so go and get a pup from a shelter and put a stop to these stupid breeders..and the animals from the shelters most of them will be glad to be alive and show u the love u want to prove to u they are happy u picked them..Godbless u..

Do you want a pet or a show dog? Do you want health testing? Do you want a quality purebred?

I think if you just need a good pet, rescue. Dogs that come from breeders can be just as sweet, but rescue dogs come with that warm fuzzy feeling that you have saved a life. :)

But it is just personal preference. My dogs are from breeders.

i say rescue before your saving a dogs life.. and i think mixes are better family dogs. i have a ridge back chow mix.. and i got him from the humaine society he is the greatest dog ive ever had.. if you rescue a dog your giving a dog a chance to live... at a life they deserve. and your doing a good deed :)

Rescues and shelters have full blooded and mixes of all kinds. And alot are even housebroken!!!! That is always a huge plus! Is it going to be a pet. The only reason the get a dog from a breeder is usually to show or breed the dog. What are you looking for?

It depends on what you are looking for. With a breeder there is usually a health guarantee, and you can see both parents. A responsible breeder will have been socializing the puppy from the time he could walk to when you take him home. You also know %100 what the puppy is.

A pound dog may have issues, but if you get a 8 week old puppy from a shelter, those issues (if he's even attained any at this point) can be worked out. Also, many shelter dogs are mixed breeds and that may or may not be what you are looking for. On the other hand, some shelters offer discount cards for a spay/neuter and shots. Some will even have you pay a $80 fee or somethign in that range for a dog, but they will have it spay/neutered for you and give it the first set of shots- which is a great deal!

I would just research local shelters in you area and see what is available there. If you don't find anyting you like, then go with a breeder.

*There seems to be a misconception that animal shelter dogs are not quality dogs. They are! My chihuahua is an awesome dog. Very even tempered, potty trained, sociable, etc. and I got her from the shelter. My brothers pure bred Schnauzer he paid too much money for is psychotic, unpredictable, barks all the time, etc. She came from a reputable breeder.

ALL dogs are the luck of the draw!

Well, it depends entirely on what you are wanting from a dog and what you plan to do with it. If you simply want a companion and have no interest in pedigrees or showing your dog in KC sanctioned events, then you should consider adopting a homeless dog from a shelter or rescue. If you want to show and compete with your dog, then seek out reputable breeders at dog shows and express interest. Don't buy from anyone who will sell you a pup as long as you have the$$$. I raise dachshunds for bench & field, BUT I have 2 senior dachshunds coming this sat. from arescue group. Why, when I breed and raise my own quality dogs, would I want a couple of old dogs with uncertain pedigree and history? Because I love dogs, and they all deserve a fair shake at life. My young prospects NEED to be well bred and show quality. My pets CAN be, but it is not required. In the end, all dogs will keep you warm in bed at night, registration papers, not so much.

Being that I do field work with my dogs it's important to me that I get well-bred healthy dogs. Only a reputable breeder can guarantee you that.

One of my Springers is a rescue dog, and though I love him just as much as the dogs I purchased from breeders, he has cost me so much more in vet bills, because of the fact that he's another product of poor breeding practices thanks to some irresponsible backyard breeder.

It really depends on what you want to use your dog for. If you want to be in the show circuit in win ribbons, get a purebred. If you don't a mixed breed is fine however having an idea of what the dog is mixed with will help you predict personality. Terriers are high energy. Hounds are more difficult to train. Working dogs are very intelligent but they need a job to do or they get destructive...
If you live in an apartment a peke mix will do better than a terrier mix.
If you have kids a lab will do better than an IG...
Different breed were designed for different tasks and make them suitable for different environments. With a purebred it makes it a bit easier in choosing your dog. With a mixed breed you should know your breeds and be well versed on dog behavior so that you choose the dog that is right for you.

Rescue dogs are a little bit more difficult to handle because they are often unstable or come from troubled pasts. But the rewards are far greater, knowing you are giving a dog a second chance at a good life. Breeders who are selling you puppies... be very wary of that. Alot of breeders just breed puppies to sell for profit, without any regard for health, hygiene or where they are going. Rescue dogs have the risk of being put down, whereas breeder puppies will most likely end up in a home of some kind.

There are pros and cons to both.

Breeder Pros: have a good idea of it's personality, breed that you like, usually a year warranty and they'll take it back no questions asked if it doesn't work out.

Breeder Cons: Expensive and could have serious health problems from inbreeding

Rescue Pros: You're saving a life, inexpensive

Rescue Cons: You don't if the dog has mental or physical problems.

I've had good and bad with both. I once had a rescue dog that turned out terribly aggressive when brought home. I've also had a dog from a breeder that had nothing but health problems it's whole life.

My current dog is from a breeder, but I knew what I wanted and the breeder was smart enough to know the puppy's personality before I bought him and knew he would be perfect for me.

rescues 1000%! I adopted one and because of my being so niave about it (he was a very special needs dog) I had to surrender him back to them because of how expensive he was to maintain. I'm on my second dog and I am so happy to have a wonderful and loving dog that had a hard beginning in life and he is sooooooo loving! Please give a rescue a second chance at a happy and loving forever home, they all don't have "issues". Shelters and humane societies also have puppies too, and all of the rescued dogs that are fully vetted!

That would really depend. Some people believe that all breeders are bad and that you can never trust them...and that is definetly not true. There are traits to look for in the DOG and the BREEDER when you are looking for a dog. There is also nothing wrong with rescuing. Considder what breed you want. Also considder how far you would go to get the dog. Here is situation my friend is having. There is a rare kind of dog called the Coton De Tulear. It`s the only kind she wants. There are nearby breeders, but the price is very high. There are also some available for less in shelters she found on petfinder, but she would have to brave a 7 hour drive with a possibility of meeting a poorly tempered dog. You should considder all of the options and look at every aspect of your choice.
