President Obama says he is “the common man” and for the underdog, why doesn't he rescue a dog...?

Because President Obama is always saying he is “the common man” and for the underdog, why doesn't he rescue a dog (to live with him and his family in the White House) rather than do what all the other “rich people” in the White House do and buy and over priced pure breed dog. If he would rescue a dog he would send a much needed message that breeding is adding to the over population of dogs in the US. Visit a dog pound and see all the pure bread dogs in there that are to be euthanized. If a 5 year ban were passed to stop breeding of any kind of dog that would give us who rescue dogs a chance to catch up with those who breed dogs for money. I have a wonderful American Eskimo mix that I rescued 2 days before he was to be euthanized that I would gladly donate to him and his family.

I really think he should adopt as well

It would be a good example for the US

But that is completley his choice.

Focused on question AND answered it. The issues aren't: making excuses for protecting breeding rights or having prue bred dogs., 1 mispelled word, WORLD MATTERS, I don't hate Obama. I pay all adoption fees and GIVE my dogs away. I DON'T do it for MONEY, I do it for the dogs! Can they say the same?

    I'm not rich.

I'm not in the White House.

I'm as common as you can get.

I have a healthy, well-bred, pure bred dog.

The two things are COMPLETELY unrelated.

As far as I know (and since I'm not American, I might be wrong), but the USA is still a democracy, and people are free to choose whatever dog they like - without having to clear it by you.

Add: and a 5-year ban would leave your country populated by poorly bred mutts - so much for being a dog lover!

I am so sick of hearing about the Obama's and their journey to find a dog. Adoption or from a REPUTABLE breeder it does nto f'ng matter. Worry about the state of the nation more than where he gets his dog.

My family was far from rich but we had purebreds. Pure breds aren't over priced. Stop condemning people for a PERSONAL choice.

One of his daughters or his wife I believe has an allergy to dogs an eskimo mix would be the last type of dog they need.

If a 5 year ban was past reputable breeders would have no animals to breed since females are retired at the ages of 5 or 6 years of age. Whole breeds could be possibly lost. Take the crusade elsewhere we have heard it before.

and its purebred. not pure bread

If you had bothered to pay attention he IS going to adopt a dog, he just wants to make sure that his daughter is not allergic to our next First Dog and they are checking animal rescues so I suggest before you get on your high and mighty soapbox again you make sure you have your fact straight!
It was one of the feature stories on yahoo...but since you clearly didn't see it here is an article about it, so get off you high horse and zip it.

He has to get as hypoallergenic as possible, because his daughter has asthma. I believe they were getting as crossbred.

In an ideal world, what you say would happen.

Failing that, if Obama's kids insist on a particular breed, it would be very nice if they went to a breed rescue for it - lots of pedigree dogs are dumped and homeless, it's not just mutts, believe me.
I'm with a breed rescue, we get all too many dogs turned in through no fault of their own.

Everybody has different opinions on dogs. Rather they rescue a dog or get a purebreed dog. People even get "mutts." Does it really matter? People love there dog, and there going to keep loving them no matter what catergory they fall in. Good for you for rescuing the eskimo because your question sounds like you want a reward for rescuing a dog. I do respect people for rescuing dogs but President Obama can do whatever he wants and pick the dog he wants. It doesn't really matter because as soon as he gets the dog, he'll be back to run the country.

Your clearly an idiot for asking such a question. One his daughter is allergic to dogs and finding a mutt in a shelter tht wont bother these allergies would be very hard.

You must also be one of those people who doesn't know anything about dogs. If there was a 5 year ban on breeding dogs than the whole purbreed population would be wipped out.

I have nothing against Mutts but its a personal preffrence on what kind of dog you wish to own. you should not be forced to own a mutt. This is America, a free country run as a Democracy not a socialist country where they force you to pick a mutt.

    1. He is planning on adopting (that's what they have been saying), otherwise they are getting a pureBRED (that's right, it's pureBRED, not pure BREAD), from a responsible breeder.

    2. A 5 year breeding ban would destroy the work that the GOOD breeders have done to improve and better the breed. The puppy mills and BYBs would still continue breeding, and there would be dogs sold on the black market. That sounds MUCH better than the way it is now, huh? The bad breeders, and the irresponsible owners are the ones contributing to the overpopulation issues. GOOD breeders heavily screen potential owners, and have a clause that the puppy/dog must be returned to the breeder if for ANY reason it doesn't work out. Many are also sold on spay/neuter contracts.

If you're targeting the bad breeders, good luck. There is no reason to penalize good breeders though.

ADD: If people were forced into getting a particular dog, they would probably harbor some resentment towards it. That would lead to abuse/neglect, and probably ultimately it ending up back in the shelter. When you eliminate choice, it can happen.

Also, it currently goes against the constitution to eliminate people's choice in what THEY want to own, as well as against the right to do what they want with their property (yes, unfortunately dogs are considered property by law, so they fall under that category).

    Source(s):

I've volunteered in rescue and shelters for many years. I've fostered. I've also helped out a breeder.

my first question to you is why would you give up your dog?! and secondly he is damned if he does and damned if he doesnt. i would love for him to get a pound puppy..but people are still going to breed regardless of what he does so does it make a difference..and as far as a 5 year ban on breeding..HAHA that would just make it illegal and the people who are breeding now would STILL breed and just charge you triple for it..and people who wanted a puppt would pay it..so what difference does it make. none.

well i do know that Obama has allergy's. So they are looking for a hypo allergenic dog. but still they could more than likely find one in a shelter. but than there will be no grantees that the dog is that specific breed either. unless it was rescued from a puppy mill.

I just read the other day that they have already been looking at shelter dogs, but they also like Portuguese Water Dogs.I am hoping that they will adopt, but it won't be until spring,as they want to wait for better weather and for the girls to be out of school so they can help to train the puppy. If they want a Porti, though, that is their business. The dog will have a great home and I am sure that it will be spayed/neutered.

So would buying an overpriced mutt be ok? Because last I heard he was looking at one of those ridiculous "designer dogs", which by the way are far more overpriced than most purebreds are.

The "common man" makes $400,000 (tax free) per year as president and makes far more than that in "book sales" and everything else...
