Can I send text messages (SMS) from foreign countries to the US on Verizon?

I'm going out of the country (to Mexico). I do not have an international plan on Verizon but I do have unlimited texting. When I am in Mexico, can I send/receive texts for free or do I have to pay an international fee?

you can still use your phone when you go as long as you have service but you will have to pay all of the international fees...its stupid
