Ear infection in dogs calls for medical attention. While some cases of this disease may heal naturally, veterinarians should be involved in the treatment process. It is essential to treat dog ear infection the moment it starts so as not to worsen your dog's condition. All dog owners have to be well-informed about this disease.

There are three types of ear infection in dogs – the outer ear infection, middle ear infection, and the inner ear infection. It is easy to know if your dog has an outer ear infection. You'll often see the symptoms of this disease, which is usually characterized by inflammation and foul-smelling wax discharge.

Or it could be ear mites
Ear mites can cause discomfort and itching.

Take him to the vet. The vet will take a sample, analyze it and give you the appropriate meds for the dog.

Go to you veterinarian and have them assess how severe the infection is. Then they will know which medication to use. One of my Labs swims all year long and quickly develops ear infections. Usually you massage drops deep into the ear canal twice a day. Stand back when they shake their heads! If you have an extremely hairy ear canal, especially in small hairy breeds, consistent grooming of excess hair at the opening of the canal can help. Also drying/cleaning the ears using a product especially for that purpose every other weeks helps keep the canal unfriendly to yeast and bacteria. This also must be massaged deep into the canal, you will hear a slight squishy sound as you massage the base of the ear (on the outside, holding the ear flap closed) once again, stand back for the head shake to avoid wearing any medication/cleanser you use.

I wish that you had said what breed of dog that you have. Spaniels and a few other breeds have a lot of ear problems. Of course, the veterinarian is the best answer.
Until you get go to the vet, use cotton balls and rubbing alcohol to clean the ears. My dog will let me squeeze the alcohol into her ears. Smelling the ears will tell you a lot. If they smell bad they need attention. I use a liquid for ear mites. It can be obtained without a prescription. I was advised to use it as a treatment and also as a preventative application. I buy it at the yard and garden/ feed store. Good Luck!

He needs to go to the vet right away. If he is shaking his head and scratching his ear, he is in a lot of pain. He may have a yeast infection that requires medicine from the vet. Never use over the counter dog meds or people meds on your pet.

Take him to the vet. If it is not taken care of quickly it can lead to more serious and EXPENSIVE problems. Take care.
