1. The most notable economic problem the U.S. faced at the end of the Civil War was deciding which states would be free and which would be slave states.
False - Lincoln had issued the "Emancipation Proclamation' during the war, effectively ending slavery in the south (the states in rebellion). Only the border states still held slaves and that was ended quickly.

2. Allowing blacks to vote and hold political office came quickly after the Civil War ended.
True - But it was taken away as quickly after 'Reconstruction' came to an end.

3. Sending Northern soldiers South in an attempt to maintain law and order was an example of Congressional Reconstruction.
True

4. The brave decision of Senator Edmund Ross to acquit President Johnson preserved the stability and balanced the powers of the branches of government.
True

5. Cowboys led an easy yet exciting life, roaming the country and keeping watch over cattle.
False - It wasn't easy. Blizzards, stampedes, outlays, Indians, wild animals, and weather all took their toll. Times were hard and so were the people of that time.

6. The construction of a true railroading system helped to greatly expand westward movement and settlement in the U.S.
True - It opened markets in the east to farmers and ranchers in the great plains. Even the development of the cowboys life was dependent on the railroads. The first cattle drives were to Sedalia, Missouri, the end of the line. As the railroad moved west, so did farmers, who did not want their fields trampled by cattle. So, in step with railroads and farmers, the cattle drives moved to more westerly towns, creating the legends of Abiliene, Kansas, Dodge City Kansas and others. We don't think of Kansas as cowboy country, but it was the terminus of the cattle drives. Well, until the railroads reached Texas, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.

7. One of the hardships faced by Native Americans, imposed on them by white settlers, was forcing them to adopt white culture and religion.
True - While the 'force' was not always open and direct, it was there. Indian Schools back east taught western religion and customs. Living and dealing with white society (which did not accept Native American standards) created tensions and discrimination.

8. Living conditions in cities like New York in the late 1800's were crowded but clean.

False - Crowded and often unhealthy. New York Tenaments were notorious for illness and bad living conditions. This is the period of mass immigration from Europe and these new people were crowded into cities like New York. Some made it west to more open areas, but even those often landed in Chicago and the developing industrial cities along the lakes.

9. Immigration was frowned upon by many Nativists, who thought those coming here were stealing jobs, putting a strain on taxes, and bringing in unwelcomed traditions/beliefs.
True - Sound like the 'illegal or undocumented' alien problem of today. It's not new. It's just a different form of 'unwelcome' to a different group. And today, those 'undisearables' come from areas, where the immigration policy of the 1800's was less strick and more open than today.

10. Women, children, immigrants, and people of color all experienced some sort of discrimination in the late 1800's.
True
