Caves are mainly carved by the greatest solvent on Earth - Water. Some or small fraction of caves on Earth may be be carved out by geographic hotspots like Volcanoes, Fault Zones, Earthquakes & etc.

Most all caves are limestone and are carved out by water flowing through cracks in the walls celing and floor of the cave

Most caves occur in limestone, which is soluble in acidic groundwater. The water percolates through the rock, dissolving the calcite and opening passages. Once the cave is there if water drips slowly, allowing the dissolved calcite to reprecipitate, then there will be stalagmites (growing up from the floor) and stalactites (hanging down from the roof). Other caves from by undercutting especially by wave action in sea cliffs. Some sandstones have soluble cement, which will dissolve like the calcite making caves and tunnels and arches.
