Macworld expo 2009 - Apple?

Why is apple pulling out after the 2009 expo? Does this mean there will still be small events similar to the 'lets rock' event in september?

And also, why is Phil Schiller giving the keynote instead of Steve Jobs? I would of thought that Steve would be doing at as its the last macworld appearence.

To the shock of Apple fans looking forward to an exciting Macworld Expo in January, Apple announced this afternoon that this will be the company's last Expo and that CEO Steve Jobs would not be giving the keynote address. Instead, Apple's senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing, Phil Schiller, will be giving the company's last Expo keynote.

"Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers," the company said in a statement posted to its website. "The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways."

In a way, this is no surprise—Apple has been scaling back its presence at various trade shows for some time now, and made waves most recently by pulling out of NAB and the Apple Expo in Paris. And, of course, there are those of us who remember the days when there were actually two Macworld Expos every year—one on the west coast and one on the east coast. Apple pulled out of Macworld New York years ago, so it was probably only a matter of time before Macworld San Francisco got the same treatment.

most recent special event with
Tim Cook and Phil Schiller Still, the news is a major bombshell to those who still consider January's event to be one of the biggest Apple-related moments of the year. And, of course, even bigger news seems to be the fact that the iconic Steve Jobs will no longer be taking the stage. The company offered no explanation for the switch, but Jobs' replacement by Schiller will undoubtedly dump several gallons of gasoline on the fire when it comes to speculation about Jobs' health and rumors about him leaving the company sooner than later.

Despite the gravity of the announcement, this won't be the last time Apple holds an event. The company has ramped up the frequency of its special media events in recent years, and of course, will continue to hold its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) every year—for now, anyway.

"Macworld Conference & Expo has thrived for 25 years due to the strong support of tens of thousands of members of the Mac community worldwide who use Macworld as a way to find great products, partake in professional development training, and cultivate their personal and professional networks," Paul Kent of IDG, the company that runs Macworld Expo, told Ars. As for what the future holds: "We're committed to serving their interests at Moscone Center January 4-8, 2010."

Thanks, I watched the macrumourlive coverage get hacked =S and then the keynote finished without any major hardware. Thanks for the article and I'm glad to hear there will still be many apple keynotes and events to come =D
