here's a good list that you can take with you to the grocery store:

http://www.grocerylists.org/ultimatest/

A couple of key ingredients to have around at all times:

~pasta
~pasta sauce
~flour
~sugar
~italian dressing [combine with pasta or use as a marinade]
~plenty of spices
~ground beef [versatile for multiple dishes]
~chicken [a big bag of individually frozen breasts will last forever]
~some kind of sweet [for when the cravings hit]
~milk
~cereal
~eggs
~cheese
~bread

with the ingredients above, you can make a number of dishes on the spur of the moment, as all are very versitile

Marthastewart.com. Sounds lame, but she has a 30 minute or less weekly menu. With a few clicks you can print all the recipies AND a complete grocery list. Allreceipies.com is neat too.

Always, always, always have pasta and a jar of sauce, on hand, chicken breast in the freezer, and you can always find something to make for dinner. I even keep a jar of alfredo sauce on hand, it makes a good base for a creamy soup when you dilute it with chicken stock, add some shrimp or chicken (cooked) some type of veggie, have some bread and a salad nd you have a great dinner really quick. My hubby says there is nothing I can't do as long as I have sauce and or chicken on hand

    Meals.com is what i use

I just find a meal that I want and it automatically makes the grocery list by category or by meal recipe or by day

It also arranges the recipe by days of the week. A real neat site. I just wish they would keep on adding 30 min recipes to the data base

I plan my menus out a week in advance and make my list both when I make my menu and throughout the week as I run out of things. It took some practice but now I only need to go to the store once a week. I post my weekly menus on my blog for anyone to see and use for themselves:

canned fruits like peaches and pine apple
pastas of various shapes I keep a great variety of spaghetti, macaroni, and noodles
rice (I find that long grain regular rice is the cheapest and most versatile)
a selection of ready to fix rice or noodle and sauce packages like rice a roni type and lipton or Knor brand for quick throw togethers with cooked meats and veg
    oatmeal
    cereal
    peanut butter
    several variety of crackers

meat bundles ( I buy from a butcher to increase variety and save money)
ground beef, chicken breasts (boneless skinless), round steak (swiss steak or dice or slice for stir fry or casseroles), pork chops and steaks, pork sausges bulk and links.and usually one nice sized roast beef or pork a week for the day I don't work and want a big sunday style family dinner, bacon and ham

    eggs
    butter
    milk
cheese ( several types some shredded and some chunks) also alway have some cream cheese
canned cressent rolls and breads( pilsbury type)

    salsa
    sour cream
    deli meats
salad and fresh seasonal veg(I buy whats on sale or in season)
and a merriad or marinades, condiments and sauces filling my fridge door to bursting
and I cant even begin with the spices lets just say I buy lots of spice blends and seasoning blends and the basic salt pepper garlic meat tenderizer parsley and chive
I replenish as used taking inventory (more or less before I head out) try to stick to my list but also look the the sales or promotions for ideas as to what to fix. I shop big twice a month for the pantry and hit the market every three or four days for bread milk and fresh fruit and veg
my monthly food bill is around 400-500 for a family of three adults

you should always have the basics, things we call staples, such as
flour, cornstarch, rice, angel hair pasta and another pasta. Sugar, salt, pepper, can or two of chicken broth, couple of cans of cream of mushroom soup or cream of chicken, vanilla extract, shortening, peanut oil, olive oil and canola oil, crackers (saltines) butter, can of evaporated milk, cocoa, bread crumbs, couple of 8 ounce cans of tomato sauce, same for tomato paste, cans of crushed tomatoes, maybe with green chilies, eggs, milk, garlic, onions, oatmeal, cornmeal, lemon juice, grated Parmesan cheese, olives, soy sauce, ketchup, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, worcestershire sauce and a box of instant mashed potatoes. I know this loooks like a lot, but really, this is the stuff you need on hand to cook almost anything. Oh yeah, almost forgot, cinnamon as well as a host of other seasonings, but this will get you started
