Why and how was it important to video game history?

It's incorrectly credited as being the first video game made.

Correctly, it helped to make arcade games popular. It was the first successful arcade game. Without Pong, there would probably be no arcade games. Without arcade games, there would probably be no consoles.

I'm guessing here, but my folks had an old atari console with pong on it, and controllers with a 'colume control' dial on, which moved the paddles up and down when you turned them. So I think it might have been one of the first games featured on a 'home console'
