Is Harry S. Truman the worst president ever?

Think about it. The Truman doctrine of 1948 says that we, as Americans, will do everything in our power to stop the spread of communism. Therefore we had the Korean and the Vietnam wars, which led us to the thinking that is was ok to start an Iraq war. I'm pretty sure we never won any of those wars. In fact, last I checked, the last war we won was WW2. The war that Truman rode FDR's coat tails on. Hmmmm?

This whole thing is nuts. You need to read some real history, and put things in some kind of perspective.

Truman was a far better chief executive than any of the dorks in the last 28 years, none of whom amount to more than dog excrement on the heels of a decent human being.

The cold war containment policy was the general operating principle that Truman developed, and you'll notice, we were never overrun with
"godless commies" or any of the other fantasy crap the fascist scum of the right wing think are more threats than their slimeoid Nazi pals, the "elite" of the ultra-right.

"Winning" wars hasn't been very meaningful for a long time, and that's where the real raw stupidity and ignorance of your bogus analysis falls apart. It's about GOALS and OBJECTIVES. Every officer of note has realized for thousands of years, as Clausewitz and Bismarck agreed, that "War is the extension of politics via other means", not the reverse.

In Korea, our goal was to keep the North Korean north of the 38th Parallel. We did that.

In Viet Nam, unfortunately, we had a real goal--making money for Nixon's scum bag associates, for example--and a professed goal, avoid the realization of the "domino" theory, itself a bold-faced, outright FRAUD. We discarded the best information, and dived in to defend and reinforce a fictional "country" we called "South Viet Nam", and as a result, even though we outnumbered those we chose to call "enemies" at all times, we got our butts kicked, badly, and outspent our perceived "enemies" by over 1000 to 1. The "Oil Wars" Bush is fighting now, with his corrupt, creep pal, V.P. Cheney, have a similar financial agenda about making money for felonious organizations like the oil companies and Halliburton.

None of this has anything to do with the Truman Doctrine, it has to do with corrupt liars who will go to any length to pull off their demented crimes.

Truman said something else, too, that has direct bearing: "A man should make a good living in politics. But anybody who gets RICH in politics is a G-- D----ed thief!" That and "the buck stops here" (this administration of incompetent, criminal, gutless worms admits NO reponsility for ANYTHING!!) need to be used and studied and applied with some viciousness, and justice against these monsters needs to be brutally enforced.

But Truman was a far better President than any Republican in history, save for perhaps Lincoln and T.R., and of course, back then, the Republican Party still had some new ideas and some commitment to reform. Now, they're just crooks and thieves and liars.

You think the last war we won was WW II? Do you remember the Gulf War in 1991? Plus, whether you will admit it or not the war in Iraq has largely been won. In answer to your main question, Ulysses S. Grant is considered by many historians to be the worst President in U.S. History.

At least Truman was intelligent enough to understand the threat of communism to the civilized world. So, my answer is no. He had his mistakes but who knows what another person would do in his place.

Franklin Pierce, James Buchanan, and Ulysses Grant were worse. And let's not forget my pick for the worst - Warren G. Harding. Not only was he incompetent, but he loved nepotism and was extremely crooked. He also couldn't control his cabinet, which led to the Teapot Dome scandal.

Truman consistently ranks highly amongst historians and regular public opinion polls. He was a fairly good president.

You have to remember that at the time, Communism was a malignant force that intended on world conquest.

Nikita Khrushchev flat out said that America was too powerful to attack by force. They would have to attack from within.

Do you not remember when Soviets tried to park nuclear missiles off our coats in Cuba in 1962?

Whenever Communism expanded, we HAD TO respond, otherwise we would be communist now.

But like I said, at least you have the luxury to criticize today. It's easy to criticize when you have NO IDEA of what we went through to get here today.

I'm a hard core republican, but there is no way 'Give 'em Hell Harry' was our worst president. Try looking instead at Jimmy Carter, Woodrow Wilson, or Sick Willy. Jimmy Gave us a really lousy economy, Wilson repealed equal rights for blacks and Sick Willy gave new meaning to slimy conduct in general.
Harry Truman inherited a lousy situation when Roosevelt died, but didn't give up and made the bold decision to end WWII quickly and decisively. Not bat for a guy that never wanted the office, huh?

No that honor would go to James Buchanan. 15th President of the US. Did nothing to protect Federal Property in the succeeded states after Lincoln was elected in 1860. Most historians will not touch a President's legacy until 60 years after they have left office though. The main reason is so people emotions have died down or the majority of the people who were old enough to vote died by then. Since you seem uneducated about Korea, it was not a US war, but a UN police action. Untill the Chinese jumped into the fight we had kicked NK behind all the way to the Yalu(sp) river.
