Should i start taking paxil? (proxetine)?... its my first anxiety medicine?

Should i start taking paxil? (proxetin)?... its my first anxiety medicine?

Okay,, today i went to my school counseling center and talked to the psycatrist for like 30 mins for the first time.. I am 20 years old and this is my first time getting any kind of professional help for anxiety.. He diddn't asked me much about me, but i told him about my social anxiety and obsessive thoughts.. so he just prescribed me Proxetine and he didn even explaind to my will go away or when i will stop taking the drug.. He just told me the dosage info...
and now i fell like he should have tried to know more about me and help me in other ways (like suggesting relaxaion techniques, and reading help books) than putting me in medication.. I don fell like my anxiety is not that severe to be put on medication..
And after reading the sideffectes online i am worried and can't decide if i should start it or not?

Dont you think the psycatrist should have recommended me other options instead of jumping into presecribing me drugs on my first day?

is this medication the kinda medication that i can start taking and stop taking it after my symptoms go away? or i am going to need to be on the medication all my life?

Any positive stories about PAXIL?
i don have health insurance so my school counsling center is the only place i could get help from...

no, look into more natural approaches first. All medicine is toxic to your body at some level.

you are having trouble functioning without the medication, that's why you went to see a psychiatrist, you should at least try it out otherwise what was the point

I take paroxetine (paxil) and it is a lifesaver for me. I also take clonazepam (klonopin) and am now completely normal.

One tip I would give you is don't get scared by the side effects, they go away after 1 week, and it usually takes 2 weeks to work. The common ones with anti-depressants are drowsiness and anorgasmia (takes a long time to orgasm). They go away after a week I promise. I've tried 3 different anti-depression meds (paxil, luvox cr, and celexa) and there was always no side effects after one week.

I think alot of the bad publicity is just from people who take them for a day then say "omg this drug is not doing anything, and I get side effects!" It's unfortunate they don't give it 2 weeks to actually start working.

Also you should see the psychiatrist once a month, and tell them if it is working or not. If you don't like this doctor, you can go to an outside mental health clinic. You will most likely have a combination of therapy and meds (psychologist/psychiatrist). They will either change your meds or up your dosage until you find the right med(s) for you.

Psychiatrists are known for prescribing medication to their patients. They never talk to you very much. They just ask basic questions like, "How are you?" "How is your sleep?" "Are you having any side effects on your medication?" and so on. If you really want to talk to somebody, then you go to a therapist. I've taken Paxil for the past couple years for my depression. I've had no bad side effects from it. I've actually lost over 50 pounds on it, which is unusual, but I know it's due to the Paxil that I lost all that weight. Most people don't lose weight on Paxil. You don't have to be on the medication all of your life unless you have a chronic condition. I currently take Klonopin for my anxiety. This medication helps lesson my anxiety. Paxil doesn't really help my anxiety, only helps the depression somewhat. Nobody is forcing you to take medication. If you don't want to take it, that is your choice. You can do deep breathing exercises or put on some relaxing music if you want. Hope that helps.
