It depends on what type it is. Either is fine for a descriptive or narrative essay, but I think the present tense would serve you better if it's a persuasive, critical analysis, or research essay.

usually for most composition essays, it should be present tense. you want the essay to be formal so you should use present tense. usually the only time i can think of that uses past tense are primarily personal narrative essays.
