What did Hunter S. Thompson mean by "American raising a generation of dancers?"?

Ordinarily I am quite apt in finding out information through the internet, however this one stumped me. The Killers latest song "Human" was inspired by the Hunter S. Thompson quote that 'America was raising a generation of dancers.' But what exactly did he mean??! Was he saying literally that people were dancing and avoiding bigger problems in life? Is 'dancer' a euphemism for something else? Please tell me.

Hunter S. Thompson meant that the US was making people afraid of stepping out of place and following their own beat. He was saying that people were only following the steps they were taught, and were also taught not to change them. In the song "Human" one of the lines is "Some times I get nervous when I see an open door". By this he meant that he is afraid to take different opportunities when they are presented to him, because living in the US has made us all afraid to go against what we've thought for all our lives. That is what Thompson.

Thank you so much! That was a very thorough and concise answer. Now it all makes sense to me.
where did the quote come from? A book, film, interview? What year and what context was it said?

See also the beggining of Chapter 6 of "Identity" by Milan Kundera. I think he and Thompson were maybe talking about the same thing.
"When he was very close, he saw her gaping mouth: she was yawing lenghily, insatiably; the great open hole was rocking gently atop the mechanically dancing body."

First good answer I have found on the Internet, I am still trying to find the Original source, it isn't in fear and loathing, i looked. Now i am sort of fixated on it reading hte original context. Although, megan's answer follows the usual vien of hunter thinking. ie "we are all puppets"

Think of a dancer as a puppet. Thompson is making the statement that all of our strings are being "pulled." The Killer's lyrics are urging Americans to "cut the string."
