Black people play the bass?

can someone enlighten me on that stereotype i saw it on southpark the other day when cartman makes a band called faith plus 1 with butters and tolke

I love Token!!!!! And that was such a great episode.

As others said, it has to do with the "black people have rhythm and white people can't dance" stereotypes.

This is a culturally-specific stereotype limited to the United States. It's not that white people are biologically inhibited rhythmically, or that black people are biologically capable of dancing . . . it's part of African-American culture and the slavery experience. Slave spirituals, soul music, hip hop, and all that jazz promoted movement and rhythm and polyphony and community. North American colonizers and slave-owners, however, were largely Protestant who are notorious prudes who outlaw dancing and fun in general :-)

How's that for a stereotype ;-)

But seriously, if you look at music videos from places like France and Brazil, black people don't dance anything like they do in mainstream American culture.

because black people got mad beats. The only white dude that can play bass as good as any black man is Flea. Other than that, white folk be trumped by black bass.

The stereotype is that black people, on average, have more "rhythm" than white folk. So playing the bass would be natural to Token.

I hate to admit it, but from what I've seen on the dance floor it's pretty much true. Though actually playing the bass would require some studying, obviously.

Your question needs clarification because in the subject heading it says "Black people play bass"?, then you refer to it as a sterotype? I don't get it. Are you trying to say "Why does there seem to be a sterotype in society that only black people play the bass?" If that were your question, I'd say just because South Park featured a black person playing bass in an episode doesn't make it a stereotype. I'm just confused as to what you're communicating here.

It's just that in blues bands (which are made up of black people) the black plays the bass.

Not always true; look at the band "The Stray cats"
