They went for Kennedy/Johnson in 1960, in fact that's a major reason Lyndon Johnson was on Kennedy's ticket (they did not like each other). I am sure the Democrats easily took Texas in 1964 when LBJ was President. I don't know after that, I don't follow state by state.
In more recent years, like many Southern states, Republicans have taken over. But for much of history, before the Civil Rights Era, the Democrats, sometimes called "Dixiecrats" ran politics in the South. Of course it was a very different Democratic party, nearly opposite the later party, being for segregation, Jim Crow Laws and against Civil Rights Legislation. The modern Democratic party was almost a different Party that started in the North and northeast.
JFK would've been considered a Conservative Democrat to today's standards, so stop using broad terms, like Republican.
