Can God make a rock he can't lift?

This was a question that was asked in my Big Questions class and I had a lot of trouble finding the answer. Eventually our teacher told us and I want to know what you think. Its like Bible Trivia!

These kinds of arguments are clearly illogical and even silly, although they are commonly used by inexperienced atheists. Most intelligent atheists have dropped these kinds of arguments long ago.

My answer would be that this sort of question exposes the flaws in human language and reasoning. It's an illusion that it means anything. However, i'm gobsmacked that your teacher gave you a definite answer!

It depends on your definition of omnipotence.

If you believe God is outside of logic, then yes.
I prersonally don't think God is outside of logic and if you rephrase the question as 'Can an omnipotent God render himself powerless' you see that the premis is illogical.

Besides I can make an object that I can't lift.

Okay, let's think about it logically. One step at a time.

God can make a rock he can't lift, but then he can increase his own strength so that he can lift it.

Then he can make the rock even heavier so he can't lift it, but then he could once more make himself even stronger so that he can lift it.

So yes, he could do it. Each time he does it, he is meeting the requirement of the riddle.

Yes, of course he could. God can do *anything* including this.....oh, wait. That would mean you *couldn't* lift the rock so, like, that would mean he wasn't all powerful (which he is). I'll change my answer then. God coulnd;t make a rock this big becasue he could move *any* rock. Aw, darn it. That would mean he wasn;t capable if creating this object when clearly he could do anything!

The answer is that it is a pardox. Might as well ask "can god make a white ball that is totally black?". It's a pardox. The two cannot exist together. Could God make you exists and not-exists at the same time? No.

And your question hasn't set any parameters for God either so I could actually also answer it as simply "No, God doesn't have the power to do this" Odin wasn't all powerful, so he couldn't have done this either. Was this the God you were talking about?
