LoL

This isn't possible. For the US to be in darkness for 36 hours the Earth's rotation would have to slow drastically. What could cause this? Think about it.

~edit~

Bikenbeer2000 - I LOVE your "HoaxWatch Update" - too bad that's not a skit on SNL, but perhaps you could make it a regular post, er, I mean "question" on this forum. <grin>

PS - I know you're time line is only through the next couple of months, but please don't forget 2012 and 2036

Will the sun rise for 36 hours on October 17, 2008?
    Status: Hoax
A very strange astronomical rumor is circulating:

Coming October 17, 2008 the sun will rise continuously for 36 hrs (1.5 days). During this time the US countries will be dark for 1.5 days.
It will convert 3 days into 2 big days. It will happen once in 2400 yrs. We're very lucky to see this. Forward it to all your friends.

This rumor appears to have come from India, so it means to say that the sun will rise for 36 hours over India, and the Americas will be dark for the same amount of time. Not that this makes the rumor any less nonsensical. The only way for this rumor to come true would be if the earth stopped rotating. Let's all hope that doesn't happen.

David Emery has already debunked this. He found that, "During a one-month period from mid-August to mid-September 2008, over 15,000 postings containing the phrase 'the sun will rise continuously for 36 hours' appeared on the Internet." He also theorizes that "the perpetrator(s) of the hoax put a great deal of effort into disseminating it."

This is an event which is not physically possible beacuse it would involve the Earth's rotation slowing to less than half speed. It originates from a guy in India by the name of Ankit Bhatia who invented the story so he could see how many hits he could get on his blog.

    Hoaxwatch Update
    Results in so far:
August 27th: Mars will appear as large as the Moon. Prediction failed.
September 10th: Large Hadron Collider will destroy the world. Prediction failed.
October 14th: Alien spaceship to appear. Prediction failed.
Current score: Hoaxers 0 Hoaxbusters 3.
    Up next:
October 17th: Sun to remain in the sky for 36 hours.
Spring 2009?: Large Hadron Collider, latest attempt to destroy the world.

    Note to Feythe:
Hoaxwatch Update has been appearing fairly regularly for the last month. This has been my first chance to rack the score up from 0-2 to 0-3. I wonder what the score will be by 2036!!

It's 101% impossible. Once if the sun remains continuously for 36 hrs then when our milkyway should get a another sun. so it means a another star comes to our milkyway and if it remains....then its possible. feel it, its very hard to digest.... see our universe is a unique system. so many stars and planets are there. find out any studies regarding the universal you can find the 36,7 days, 24hrs sun remains continuously.this can may be happen in forthcoming years.... if any changes in out milkyway or universe......

Where do you people get this stuff? Today is Oct. 14th. There is/was supposed to be a giant ALIEN SPACE SHIP make it self know to humanity? Did it happen...*NO*. Will it happen *NO* and now they moved the days around to the 17th and now it will be a Sun anomaly of some kind.

Is there anything on the calendar for Oct. 20th? I wonder. Or...will we all be dead by then from another hoax?

Looks like a 1st grader wrote that. Don't worry It's just a chain mail or something.

No, no, no. We have to get through today's October 14th lunacy first. Post your question tomorrow, whatever it is. Go ahead, we'll wait. We'll studiously ignore this one, and check it out with enthusiasm tomorrow, of that you can be sure.

That's complete idiocy. Find out who is emailing you this garbage and block them.

Then find out where they live, and send someone over to their house to smack them in the head with a two-by-four. They're too stupid to live.

This answer will be thumbs-downed by simpletons.

No, of course not. It is impossible for the sun to "rise continously" for 36 hours as you describe. This is complete fiction.

This is a hoax, invented in a competition to drive users to blogs. It's physically impossible, as any 10-year-old can tell you.

    what idiot told you that?
for that to happen the earth would have to slow down rapidly and then speed up again after the 36 hrs is up?
now can you see how unplausable that is?
