A beaver is a rodent that cuts down trees with its teeth and builds dams and lodges from the wood. Some beavers live in hollows in the river bank. Their primary food is poplar bark.
Woodchucks are also known as groundhogs. They burrow into the ground and their diet is mostly green leafy vegetation. They often do a lot of damage to gardens and vegetable crops. Their burrows can be dangerous to livestock and people if they step in the holes.
Beavers tend to be larger than woodchucks and their pelts are more valuable. Beavers can cause damage by flooding land behind their dams.
