When sending an email to text to Spain I am using: [e-mail] What should the username be ?

I am looking for a cheap (if not free) way to send text messages to my boyfriend in Spain. His cellphone provider is Vodafone. I’ve looked online and people recommend sending email to [e-mail]. But what is the “username” supposed to be? His cellphone number?

Also, is there another way to send cheap/free sms messages from Canada to Spain?
