In scientific notation, you have to make sure the final number is somewhere between 1 and 10. Thats the point.

So instead of 123456.789, you say

1.23456789 x 10^5.

See how its 1.2? 1.2 is between 1 and 10 obviously. and its to the fifth power of ten because if you count back from 6 to 1, thats five places the decimal point has to move.
