Fyodor Dostoevsky............?

Nietzsche thought of him as a genius. He is considered to have been an acute observer of 19th century morally deteriorating(as he perceived it) society.

Brett Easton Ellis happened to use the introduction from "Notes From The Underground" as an opening quote for "American Psycho"...

How familiar are you(if any) with this author? What are your views on him?How do you perceive him,his philosophy, and what do you think about it?Favorite books,whatever,comments...

Hopeless Romantic:

Nietzche is a philosopher that is,amongst other things, largely misunderstood. To me he was a genius, but he's not an essential read if you're a deist and have decided to stick with it.

About Dostoyevski though,I think you will find him to your liking.Read "The Idiot"; it's one of my favorites.

You or yahoo emailed me about your questions so I will answer them but I know I won't get best answer for this answer. Embarrassingly I haven't read Dostoevsky's works yet. I do know I don't like Nietzsche though, so I can't really say once I've read Dostoevsky's work how I would take it. I might possibly like Dostoevsky's work a lot while I still oppose Nietzche. With good things I have heard about his works, I have wanted to read his works but haven't got to it yet. I will say I oppose elitism & narcissism. I will say though I oppose communism & marxism even. I will say capitalism or socialism doesn't have the right answers absolutely either. I will say conservative democracies or republics doesn't have the answer either. I will say I believe God exists for sure & even scientifically can be successfully proven to exist. I will say God can be the best thing to happen for a lot of people & maybe an improvement for most people. For me personally I have a quarrel with God really caring enough about me & other people as much as God says he does. I can base this on a personal experience I'm going through now & having gone to God for help & God hasn't helped yet & I have seen no signs in my life personally that he will help in my situation, which in my situation I'm in now, I can say personally for me God's help or my situation changing is what will determine if I consider God to be truly caring as God says he is or not. For me personally I don't take others' words as fact as what is good for me to be happy for example, because I go by what really exists as opposed to lip service. That being said I might read some Dostoevsky soon. Keep in mind I can be entertained with literature & finding stories sad, but my personal philosophies aren't changed by someone's misfortune if they have nothing to feel suffering about. I believe in helping the suffering already but I won't feel sympathy for the rich man who can't afford to buy out an oil company & feels he's suffering because he didn't get to make an extra billion to add to his billions he already has. If someone is suffering for love or not having a roof over their head or not having a job or is starving, I will feel sympathy for people & yes I said for love too. I also believe in sticking up for people's & animals rights. I do believe in equality as well. No matter what I read nothing will sway me on this, with this in mind....any recommedations?

With the publication of Crime and Punishment Dostoevsky became one of Russia's most well know authors. Dostoevsky has also been called one of the founding fathers existentialism. In particular Notes from Underground has been refered to as a founding work of existentialism. For Dostoevsky, war was an uprising of the people against the idea that logic can guide everything. And thus, reason is the ultimate principle of guidance for history or mankind.

Nietzsche referred to Dostoevsky as "the only psychologist from whom I have something to learn: he belongs to the happiest windfalls of my life, happier even than the discovery of Stendhal."

I think Freud wrote an article entitled "Dostoevsky and Parricide", or something like that, that asserts that the greatest works in world literature are all about parricide (though he is critical of Dostoevsky's work overall, the inclusion of The Brothers Karamazov in a set of the three greatest works of literature is remarkable).

    And just for Kimberly - I'm 17.

The books I liked are Crime And Punishment, The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov. His dreams always have a psychological view. In the dream about the horse. When the mare sacrifice's itself for the men in too much of a hurry to wait. This could be a symbolic of woman sacrificing themselves for me.

The Idiot - The idiot stem from his desire to depict "positively goodman"
This man is likened to Christ in many ways. If Myshkin be seen as Christ, Rogozhin could easily be seen as the devil, "rog" in Russian means horn.

The Brothers Karamazov - In his final Novel Fyodor is generally considered the culmination of his life's work. Fyodor advocated a Christianity in which human redemption and ressurrection could occur
on earth through sons redeeming the sins of their father's, to create unity through a universl family

    good question.
