Abraham Lincoln founded the republican party?

Huckabee just said that Lincoln made the republican party but isn't that wrong? I could have sworn Lincoln joined the Republican party years after it was actually founded.

Lincoln was among the original members.

It sometimes confuses people because the Democratic Republican party, founded by Thomas Jefferson, called themselves Republicans until the early 19th century, when they began calling themselves Democrats.

This, by the way, is one reason both major political parties in the US call Thomas Jefferson their founder.

Huckabee's an idiot. Lincoln wasn't even the first Republican nominee, that was John C. Fremont. Lincoln was the first Republican president, but he had nothing to do with the creation of the party.

You are right. The Republican party was founded in late 18th century. Back then it was called Democrat-Republican party. Thomas Jefferson was the one of the founders. The Democrat Party split from the Democrat-Republican party due to Andrew Jackson's defeat in the President race in 1824. What Huckabee meant what The Lincoln shaped the GOP into what it is. That is wrong too. The issues the GOP support before the 1960's are what the Democrats support today and visa versa.
