Seems to be a common problem with AIM, and I had this exact same issue on my laptop and my wife's laptop, while trying to connect using video chat on my last business trip.

Just today I tried it with Sightspeed (completely free) and it worked a lot better. It automatically detected the microphone and webcams for both computers (Fujitsu for my wife's with a built-in webcam, and a Creative Optia for my work laptop that plugs into a usb port).

Gave it a test run here at home and am looking forward to using it tomorrow when I travel to Chicago.
